Today I started thinking about how low-class some people can be. I submitted to yuppyhood this morning when I stumbled into a Starbucks while blindly wandering the sunny streets in a crazed undercaffeinated state. The thing about downtown San Francisco is that every building is built with HUGE windows on the ground floor so that you can watch all the asshole executives walk by with their whores from the tenderloin who can't walk in heels without bending their knees in a very funny way.
A woman came into the coffee shop with her teenaged daughter who looked more than a little embaressed to be out with her mom. She was obviously of that age where you can't get anywhere without your parent's help but you want to slit your wrists everytime they open their mouths. The girl was an alternateen. She did punk in all the "right ways". She shopped at hot topic and had on a brand new Depeche Mode T-shirt. I didn't know anyone under 25 knew who Depeche Mode was.... So this girl is fiddling with her spikey bracelets when her mother comments rather loudly on how pricey coffee is getting now. The din gets a little quieter as people turn an ear towards the woman. She proceeded to explain to her very red-faced daughter how corperations will screw you out of your money if you let them and chains like Starbucks are overpriced and badly made and cheat their coffee farm workers. The people behind the counter were looking particularly uncomfortable, dreading the woman approaching the register. But the funny thing was, she got up there and sweetly asked for a carmel blah blah frappa blah with soy milk and an extra blah blah topped with whipped cream and chocoalte shavings. Her daughter ordered but mumbled it so quietly I couldn't hear. The lady got her drink and sucked down a third of it in one gulp before exhaling loudly and leading her daughter out of the store.
I wonder if they gave her some sort of discount and made her drink faster than everyone else's to get her out of there silently... not a bad trick if you have no money and need your coffee.
