Today we here are in mourning. All flags are at half staff. It's an incredibly powerful image-- especially around the Washington Monument and the flag on top of the White House.
We are in mourning for Teddy, our Lion in the Senate.
Most of you know about the ghost tours business. For those who don't, here:
http://dcghosttours.com/ghost-tour-guides And you guys know me, I'm kind of a skeptic. Not a total skeptic (I can tell a good ghost story), but I don't really know what to say about tonight.
One of the stops on the tour is St. John's Episcopal Church, also known as the Church of the Presidents. Every president since Madison has attended at least one service there, including JFK. Pew 54 is the President's Pew: it has a plaque labeling it as such. Here's a quick version of the story I tell:
"In a time of national mourning, when a great leader of our country dies, tradition holds that the bells of St. John's toll to mourn their passing. When that happens, witnesses have seen six ghostly figures file into the back of the church and walk down the center aisle. They pause outside Pew 54, bow, and they're seated. Before any witnesses can approach to see who they are, they disappear. Nobody knows who they are, some folks believe they are the founders of our country come to mourn the passing of a great leader."
Yadda yadda, if it's a good crowd I throw in the Masons, the end.
But tonight?
Every. Single. Picture. Had a weird flash of light or a phantom moon. Beams of light came from weird corners. A six year old kid caught one of me silhouetted with light shining from within the church.
...
I don't know what I believe, but I know that I only had one thought.
Teddy.
Glad you're with them, buddy.
