Before Sunrise
As is part and parcel of my daily life, today is Friday, the first day of my weekend. I wake way before dawn in what I like to call the gloaming (around 3:30ish - 4am) just about the time many of my friends are heading to bed. It is my ritual during this time of the year to make a cup of tea or coffee depending on what strikes my fancy, this morning it was chocolate velvet coffee; and walk through my garden and observe what my work has done.
The nearly wild rosebush is fully leaved and is setting blooms, they should pop sometime this week. The chokecherry is done blooming and is getting ready to start berries. I rarely get any because the squirrels get to them while they are green, so be it, one of my many blessings is bringing wildlife to the yard. The dogwood is heavy with blooms and the birds will be feasting this fall. The tulips are done and turning brown. It's time to plant the perennials to replace them. The lavender is doing great and this is the year the foxglove should bloom, so I'm looking forward to that. The hollyhocks are happy and setting leaves as fast as they can. The Philadelphus (mock orange) that I thought I'd killed a couple of years ago, is growing strong and getting ready to send out blossoms. My raspberries are covered in blooms as are the blackberries and the strawberries are doing OK. I will have to move them this year or next, depending on when we get that garden box built. The large maple next door has grown so much since we moved in they are just not getting enough sunlight to really produce the way I'd like them to. The lilac is the same way, time to think about where I want to move that bush as well.
Ahhhh the sun is starting to rise I can see the light peeking up over the trees out front. Live by the sun and love by the moon!
The garden boxes we finished last weekend in the rain and planted, are still only growing rocks, but I expect great things from them in a couple of weeks. I need to plant peas and beans yet, as the rain kept us from finishing that last little bit. I am continually amazed at the tenacity of the common Johnny Jump up, I have managed to fill my neighbors rock-way full of them and I plan to replant some of mine into pots but let the rest just grow wild in the yard!
So many new things to add this year, hydrangeas, mountain ash, delphinium, lupine, and more fox gloves! Guess it's time to get off the computer, go back out into the garden and finish up the last of the planting.
