Listen

Pacing through the Viles Arboretum, she listened to the night. It was too soon for leaves to rustle in the wind. Everything was raw buds and sprouts, growing and reaching and clawing out into the cold wet air. When the wind blew hard enough, branches scraped shriveled bark together.

Cresting a low slope, she listened to the city. A siren called out in the distance, in the direction Alice had left to hunt. Before, the two of them had hunted together with some respect. Now she could only remember waking up to Alexander's wrist and the belated humiliation as she learned in front of the Covey everything that had happened. Having to be rescued.

Shutting her eyes, she listened to her memories since that night. Some believed she was VII. Some believed she was Forsworn. Some believed she was a threat. Some believed they would kill her. Some believed she had their answers. Some believed she knew nothing.

Opening her eyes, she listened to the Adversary sing.

The Dragons in their own way had an ambition that she had been surprised to discover most Forsworn lacked. The Forsworn had a fearlessness and honesty that no Dragon could match. If she survived these nights she expected great things from herself, and wondered if either Forsworn or Dragon would be able to recognize them.

More sirens came from the south, and she went to go see what Alice was up to.
