Knitting The Gown:
I've decided to knit my wedding dress. That
makes me pretty much insane. I saw an article in a knitting
magazine a while back about these 2 women who designed and made a
wedding dress for a fashion show, and thought it was an astounding
project. So, clearly. After a bit of searching online, I
found
the pattern (w/ photo)
and started my quest for the right yarn. The bodice is done in a
ribbon yarn, and the skirt is very loosely knit mohair/silk, done in
widening concentric circles, so it ends up being very swishy &
flowing.
For the skirt, I placed an order through work (at
Stitches). My boss was kind enough to sell me the mohair wholesale - an early wedding present. It's
Madil Kid Seta, #416. I found the yarn for the bodice at So Much Yarn, a shop in Belltown. It's called
Glam #2135,
a Straw Into Gold yarn, acrylic & rayon, light to the touch, a
little shiny. I finally had all the materials in hand by 2
February & got to work.
The bodice knit up very quickly. I'll post pictures one of these
days... the fit is good, but I'm not sure I like the neckline. I
may rip it out, down to the arm holes, and then rework it in a more
open style - either a wider scoop with less of a flappy detail or maybe
spaghetti straps. We'll see. I'm going to wait til the
skirt is done and attached so I can get the full visual. I
started the skirt on Thursday, 17 Feb... and then promptly spill coffee
on it. Lesson learned, you can't clean coffee out of white
mohair. This is going to be a long, delicate project. So I
restarted on the 18th, and my goal is to knit 3 skeins a month, and
finish in 10 months. Just a week & 1/2 later though, I've
already knit up 2 of the 30 skeins. It's getting very fluffy,
soft, and... big.
The skirt starts with 150 stitches, knit in the round. Then, at
periodic intervals, you double the number of stitches - so 150 turns
into 300, then 600, then 1200, then 2400, then lastly 4800 stitches a
row. I'm at 1200 right now. Man alive.
And that is all I have to say.
