Oh suck, seriously? The rift was always gonna be as pathetic as LANA? A beauitful, tragic friendship of legend, ended because of a fight over a GIRL?
Sadly, though, it's the only thing that seems to make sense of Michael's words here.
I was thinking maybe the CoCK was supposed to start the rift, and, really, I think I would have been sort of okay with that. It wouldn't have been amazing, but it would have at least made sense. Clark would have misinterpreted and cut Lex out of his life, Lex would have ended up resenting Clark for not understanding him and ultimately chosen a 'to hell with it, I'll just try my utmost to hurt him instead in revenge!' path, and we would all have known where we were. But no, the show made it very clear in S03 that Clark FORGAVE Lex for the CoCK (not that it really needed forgiving so much, but whatever).
Man, I wish I'd known that slip by Tom early on though. Because, seriously, if the plan was that Lex was going after Lana from the get go I think they did a VERY bad job of implying it. The Lexana seemed to come OUT OF NOWHERE for me, and I still have to work hard when I re-watch stuff to see where Lex (and Lana, though mostly Lex) is developing an attraction to her and why.
I wish I still had that spot recorded. I used to have it on videotape as part of a commercial break...
Although I'm a die-hard Chlexer, I have to say I saw hints here and there from Metamorphosis onwards. With this I'm not implying Lex was madly in love with Lana in those days or that he harboured some secret plan to snatch her away from Clark or anything, but that I had a gut feeling even before seeing that spot towards the end of Season One that they'd eventually write romantic Lexana into the mix.
