Beta Request?
So, I have a Lex-centric Smallville kidfic that's almost finished. It's been almost finished for over a year now, and I've asked my friend and usual beta to look at it and she's kind of flaked out on me, but I think it's at the point where I need some outside input to figure out how much of it is solid, and what more it needs to be complete.
I haven't really kept up with the show since season 5, but the fic is more in the flavor of the stuff that came out around the first three seasons anyway. I've been writing it for so long I'm half afraid that it's getting a bit dated. It's kind of inspired by (though it has nothing to do with) the episode in season 4 when the election results come in. Johnathan Kent is surrounded by pretty much the whole town and Lex is drinking alone. I thought, "God you'd think at least his campaign manager would be here," then I remembered that the campaign manager was shot in the previous episode, and I decided that Lex needed a kitten or something. That kind of merged in my head with another idea I had for a kidfic that spun into this (currently) 20,000+ word monster.
The foundation for this fic is Smallville canon, but I've stolen details and backstory from all sorts of places, mostly Silver Age and early 90's Superman comics. I'd like someone to go through it and make sure that it's sensical to people who aren't familiar with all the source material. I'd also appreciate if it could be vetted for anything I've unconsciously taken from other SV fics. Kidfic is my biggest weakness, and I think I've read just about every SV kidfic ever, and I want to avoid unconscious plagiarism.
Grammar and spelling errors and that sort of thing are a secondary consideration right now, I mostly want to make sure the story is in place.
I'm asking here because this is really the only SV comm I'm anything more than a lurker in, and I know that you guys won't be immediately opposed to my sympathetic characterization of Lex. The story is CLex but PG and likely to remain so, no mpreg, and lots of kidfic type schmoopyness. I tend to write scenes in chunks and figure out where they fit in the fit in the story afterwards so, if somebody agrees to look at it, I'll try to explain the couple still unwritten scenes that I think go in the gaps.
I'm looking for constructive criticism. I realize that it's a longish fic and I'm asking a lot but I'd really appreciate some feedback, if you've got the time. Thanks.
