New Superman movie...

Meanwhile, star Henry Cavill explains Superman's arc in the film:

"Imagine what it would be like to be someone like Clark Kent/Kal-El and feel like a stranger amongst even those that you love, never developing full relationships with people for fear of them discovering how much of a freak you are. Even you don't understand exactly what you are. It's just a lonely existence. With someone who has that much power and responsibility."

Actually, I don't have to imagine this scenario, because we had ten years of it on 'Smallville'. In fact, that was almost all we ever did have on 'Smallville': Clark moaning about how he couldn't have a full relationship with anyone, tormenting the people in his life, because of his fear, then blaming them for everything. And, though this could have been an interesting theme for the show, if only it had been acknowledged and dealt with, it never was acknowledged and dealt with, because the show itself seemed to say it was the fault of everyone but dear, sweet Clark.

I've commented once or twice in various Superman forums about this, and of course I've been told that this is a movie, and not 'Smallville'. I know that, but I can't help thinking that the very theme of Superman being all angsty about his existence will just take over. There will be no real story. Clark/Superman will just blame everyone else for his pain, and that will be his rationale for everything. At least it does not appear that Lex Luthor is in this movie -- or am I wrong about that?

At least the Christopher Nolan Batman movies acknowledged Batman's internal darkness, and Bruce had a reason for his depression, other than 'feeling like a stranger'.

If anyone is still here, what do you think? :-)
