Costume Inspiration

The Bar One Brawlers are a group of characters designed by Dez for the Bar one cosplay group. The concept is based of a melee style fighting game with each character designed to match the cosplayer.

It was very exciting to have an original character designed for me. The hair reminds me of a particular character from the star wars series with the bright colours creating, what was affectionally refered to as, ” My first Jedi”.

Construction Details

Initally I trouble finding the perfect purple fabric for this costume, in the end I lucked out on using the reverse of a super cheap satin from John Lewis. The cape and side skirt were created using my favourite fabrics, shot taffetas. I wanted to bring out the designs’ space age glow, so mixed together a selection of acrylic paints and mediums to form a pearlescent fluroescent colour used to paint all of the details on the skirt, top and armour.

I used an old princess seam dress pattern for the top alterning the sleeves to add in flare. The sleeves were gathered into a pair of purple jersey gloves.  The skirt uses a simple circular pattern, the split is joined together with white leatherette belts which are supported with plastic boning.

The patchwork side skirt was made by overlocking fabric red and pink fabric sections and stitching them onto the white base. It snaps onto the main skirt using poppers.

All of the amour was made from craft foam, each piece was primed with a mixture of PVA glue and white acrylic gesso. These were all painted with silver acrylic paint and sealed with spray gloss varnish. The little orange faces were made using the same technique.

For the hair, I made many Lycra tubes and filled them full of bean bag filling (small polystyrene balls). This made each tentacle flexible and light, even if all I heard when I moved my head was rustling! I removed all of the wefted hair from an old unwanted wig to leave the wig mesh, and stitched on each tentacle individually adding the purple strips with acrylic paint.

The costume was completed with a purchased blue light sabre, silver 60′s boots, purple stockings and red contact lenses.
