I’m home for the holidays and without a sewing machine, What to do?
With a competition looming, I decided to get all of my wig styling done over Christmas. Both of these wigs are for characters from the first Vampire Hinter D novels; D and Doris.
In the artwork D is portrayed with white/grey hair but I wanted to create a more natural look for photos. In the end I purchased three different coloured curly wigs (Platinum blonde, honey blonde and grey) and straightened each on using hot water.
Firstly I unpicked the wefts from the grey and platinum blonde wigs. Then working layer by layer, I hot glued the wefts into the honey wig. This resulted in one very thick wig but I was pleased with the colour of the fibre mix.
I’m not sure if D has a fringe or not, since anything would be hidden under his hat. In the end a chose to style in a fringe in as it would be time consuming to blend different coloured fibres into a resin skin parting.
I still feel that the wig may be a little too thick, but I am going to wait until the whole costume is complete before I attack it with a pair of thinning scissors.
Doris’s wig was a little more simple than D’s. Once again a bought a long curly wig, this time I needed one with a skin parting to reflect her swept back style. I straightened it with hot water and used a razor comb to work the layers in, back combing the roots to give volume. Finally I used hairspray and my fingers to work in the layer and extra volume in at the crown.
Once I get it onto lauras head, i’m certain there will be more back combing and razor combing final touches! But for now the wigs are one thing I can cross off from my massive to do list!
