Omnibus Bathos

An alarming proportion of my friends and acquaintances seem to be garnering a (frankly disturbing) degree of acclaim on the music circuit. Don's group were accorded a two page spread (accompanied by the obligatory moody group shot) in the Times' cultural supplement last week (preparatory to the imminent release of single and album), and John "Marrsy" Maher has attained a level of local stardom in his capacity as lead singer with Jaded Sun (http://www.jaded-sun.com/)

Happened to encounter Marrsy on the bus last Tuesday (subsequent interrogation revealed that he was travelling to rehearsals) and asked what he was doing for a living these days.

"Just toilin'", he sighed, his voice laden with resignation and searing resentment.

I nodded in silent empathy with the artist's predicament. Tethered to our quotidian reality by bonds of necessity, his elevated sensibilities constantly assailed by the ineluctable ignominy of banal, everyday existence.

Then the delayed auditory reaction kicked in.

"Oh, TILING..."

"Yeah. Kitchens and bathrooms and that, y'know."

"Oh right."
