I can't really explain it, but I haven't been able to like this character ever since the anime days. I can't. Maybe because he is so hard on/mean to Sanada (and the team), when to Sanada he seems to mean the world. I can't forgive him for that! (and Satoumizu is to blame...also for the little redemption I grant him).
On a less objective (?)point of view...because I am a San...Tango Pair fan : )
I am now pretty much sure this is a series I would have never got into if it hadn't been for the anime : ( And Ryoma IS one of the worst cases of Gary Stu EVER! He is there in 95% of the chapter pin-ups? WHY?!!!
There is only one other main character I hate about as much as Ryoma for Mary-Sueism. And that's dearest Miaka from Fushigi Yuugi. I swear, I could've torn her apart!
Everybody fell for her. EVEN NURIKO!!! WHO WAS IN LOVE WITH HOTOHORI! GAHHHH! And Hotohori's last words he muttered short before he died?! Not about his wife nor son but about fucking MIAKA!!! *grrrr*
It's been years since I've watched FY but it still makes me mad. And since that hair incidence came up in PoT, well, Ryoma managed to crawl up my shitlist of most hated main charas. >.<
... which is really sad. There were parts in the anime series where I liked him, too.
I tried, TRIED, my very best not to hate Miaka, because she was annoying like hell in many senses, as I wanted to keep enjoying the show, and that becomes difficult when she is the main character and everybody says her name at least 100 times in every chapter (anime or manga). But I can see how you couldn't control that hate.
It is sad, if you consider it codly. Because she was a good girl, but nothing to cause such a fuss. That is why that kind of manga is not for me anymore. When it was fun, it was VERY FUN, but from 33 on? Sucked big time.
I liked Ryoma in the anime. He was a brat, but he showed a lot of his human and boyish side too, while at the same time maintaining his touch. In the manga, they are so scarce I wonder if I have read something nice of him at all!
Thank you for phrasing EVERYTHING I feel into nice paragraphs and logic and... not a single bit of keyboard mashing. Because GAH, I totally feel you. I miss MinaJun's Echizen of occasionally-cute. Because he was a brat, but he was also a twelve-year-old brat. This one's just... some warped fantasy that Konomi came up with.
She did an awesome job as Ryoma. And the animators, the dogs included, and whomever took Konomi's fantasy of a superbrat and turned it into a decent sports series, deserve all my love and admiration, because they worked it into something worth remembering and very ENJOYABLE.
To Konomi all the credit and copyright, sure. But no more than is his due, me thinks : (
Glad you see it my way, my fellow (BADLY mistreated) Rokkaku fan!!
Rokkaku is like. ... I don't know. There is no comparison. Because PoT is beyond compare - it's just that bad. I think people are only in the fandom anymore because that's just it. The whole thing is FODDER for fandom. You can write anything you want about any damn character in there, and nobody can say it's OOC. I mean, what's OOC for, say, Itsuki?
*clings to Eyeshield 21 - the art, characters, storyline, and, hell, TEAMS are so much BETTER. ;_______;
Itsuki, even, is different in manga and in anime! Only during the summer camp did he do the "nande?" thing that the ANIME might have started!
I think one of the reasons I have taken this arc so critically is because I had read E21 volume 24 in the train before, and the difference in DETAIL, if only, among the million things, the DETAILS were overwhelming, compared to the 1-face page PoT has. Then again, they play 2 authors against 1, and what a couple of mangakas they are, Inagaki and Murata senseis!
I think one of the big problems with the series is that we don't ever get inside Ryoma's head. We never know what's going on with him so it's hard to develop any empathy for him
And PoT isn't really a sports series, for all that's it's about a sport. Tezuka & Oishi have a fairly normal sports arc, but then it collides with Ryoma's magical quest arc (or whatever genre his story is following) and it all gets weird from there.
I'm sad that PoT is frustrating you so much right now. :( But there's nothing to be done -- either one will like it or they will not.
Perhaps. But still, I REALLY liked him in the anime. I got enough of his personality there, didn't ever need more.
Do you know what I think? This series is like Togano's manga: a mixture of everything else published in Shonen Jump before, only, with not a single defined line of purpose.
I like your two main lines, though, the serious line of Tezuka and Oishi and all the SENPAIS (2nd and 3rd year, juice included), and the one of Ryoma's magical quest. Because it's like that. And then they all get superpowers to be a super team together. Or something. Or because Konomi was pissed off by Ryoma defeating Tezuka so easily in the anime, at the end, and wanted to justify the super-bucho? I don't know.
But honestly, the auras! And people actually SEEING the auras! O___o No. NONONONONONONOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO.
Don't worry, I will keep trying to extract and keep only the best from every single page : ) As if it were water from the dessert.

...I know it was for the good of Sanada, but still.

I have kind of lost the interest in PoT after the anime series cause all of that you mentioned up there totally pissed me off.
I'm totally with you there.
