On the whole, I enjoyed it. There were lots of things that I liked about it and a few that I didn't, but the 'like' outweighed the dislike in my eyes. I had pretty high expectations for this episode, being the follow-up to my favorite Aliens in a Spaceship from Season 2. Though, in my mind, I completely knew that it would have to be an exemplary episode to top that one, and there was little chance of that happening.
I guess I will start with a few things that I didn't like:
*I don't want to compare AiaS to HitH, but what I liked about AiaS was that it was emotionally brilliant, with a huge emphasis on Booth and Brennan. I consider Hero in the Hold to put more emphasis on Booth's backstory rather than the couple, which is fine. Booth backstory is fabulous, and one of my favorite aspects of the show so I'm not too bothered by it. I was just really hoping for more B&B emotions, and maybe some more worry on Brennan's part. The hug at the end was good from Brennan's POV but Booth was still trying to figure out what was going on with Parker back there, so his mind wasn't with her. Again, good for Booth's backstory stuff, just a little different than I expected.
*The Gravedigger being the attorney was very predictable. There really wasn't anyone else it could have been! And seriously, how did she get Booth to that ship anyway? I kind of wanted the GD story to go unresolved for now, but oh well.
*Why did they recast Vega? I don't know why but that bothered me. And I kind of missed Jeanine, the journalist that was originally supposed to be the GD.
*I think that the Gravedigger story was overwhelmed by the Teddy Parker story, and they used the GD story to bring us the latter. The GD story was almost like an afterthought. I'm not sure that I liked that. And I really missed all of the science we normally get.
*Agent Perotta can just go away. I am very much done with her. *sigh*
And what I liked:
*Brennan smacking the GD with the briefcase. Yeah it may be assault but the witch deserved it and a whole lot more. I am a little tempted to make an animated avatar of it but the only text I can think to put with it are vulgar words and I don't quite want to go there. lol
*Booth in a TUX is hot stuff. Wet!Booth in a tux is even better. Wet!Frustrated!Booth in a tux throwing broken equipment is brilliant.
*Booth says she's beautiful, again! And he hadn't even seen her yet.
*Booth's line "I've been drugged, electrocuted, stuffed in a... Beatles toy." lol
*The Booth and Teddy scenes were so well done, IMO. I loved all of their flashbacks and conversations. Still not sure of the ghost or hallucination aspect yet but I loved that it helped Booth to work out one of his past regrets at not saving his friend. LOVED them talking about Booth's son Parker, and the emotions all over their faces when Teddy says 'that's my name'. Also, from a BB view, I love Parker's talk about Claire how he was afraid to tell her he loved her. Booth thinks it's easy to say, but Parker made him think about someone he loves and has never said it to. I think that it was painful to Booth so he pushed it aside again.
*Booth was again saving Teddy on the ship as he tried to save him back in the war. The flashback of Teddy laying dead and Booth sitting next to him is heartbreaking. I love the effects they used on these clips.
*Loved how Hodgins stole the evidence and was set on finding out who did it, almost to the expense of Booth. Just like the end of AiaS, he was traumatized from being down in the car and I really liked to see him focused on catching the GD.
*Jared redeemed himself in this episode, IMO. Loved how Brennan called him out and said he didn't deserve his brother, and loved how Jared finally came through unselfishly.
*Cocky belt buckle played a pivotal role in getting out of the ship!!
*LOVED how Brennan saved Booth in the end. I'm so glad it was just the two of them. I wanted a bit more there, but I'm glad for what I got.
All in all, the episode didn't live up to what I really wanted (which, duh, was more BB - I am hopeless) but I enjoyed it because it gave me more pained Booth, struggling with some hard memories, trying to get over what 'he' did to Teddy. If I can't have BB, I'll take Booth backstory any day.
