Doctor Who 4x11 (Turn Left) reaction
I haven't felt the need to post my thoughts on Doctor Who this season until I saw 'Turn Left' last night. It's not that I haven't liked the season so far. I have liked aspects of the episodes (Donna, Rose cameos, humor) but after last night's episode I felt the need to voice my total glee and happiness at how they brought Rose back to us. BAD WOLF!!! RTD did it right! Seeing Rose in the Tardis again, stroking her, seeing her worry and absolute care... I remembered why I liked Rose and why I'm so happy she's back. She has matured and changed as well, confident and as someone else on my flist said, not envious or jealous. I loved her. Donna is and always will be brilliant. I came into this season unsure of her character, but she's been amazing, and almost nearly became my favorite companion. Truly brilliant.
I just loved the premise to this episode. Just making one small decision and you'll change your whole life. I LOVED that they included so many storylines from S3 and showed how they'd have changed had Donna never met the Doctor. That scene from TRB, where the water is rushing in and he's staring blankly... what a striking time to end the Doctor's life. I mean, if it had to happen, that's definitely the moment. He looks like he wants to end it all, and that scene has been used over and over in angsty Doctor/Rose videos. I think it's just fabulous and intriguing that RTD chose to use that moment to show the Doctor not being able to go on. I don't for one minute think that he couldn't have made it out if he'd wanted to.
And just seeing everything go wrong from then on was just so exciting: The hospital disappearing and only one survivor (martha not being one of them), Titanic replica crashing into London, Fat things, Gwen and Ianto dying (WHAT??!!!). It is just an awesome domino effect through everything, and I just loved that it was all because Donna wasn't there to 'stop him'.
Squee-worthy moments for me?
Rose's line talking about his hair! Damn if I didn't melt right there. "Great hair. Some really great hair."
Donna asking Rose if she and The Doctor were ever close. "Were you and him...?" I loved the looks that they gave each other. No answer is necessary.
And then the last two minutes. From the moment where the Doctor starts questioning Donna worriedly about the girl in the other reality.. 'Who is she?' 'What did she look like?' The editing here is beyond awesome! "Two words" spoken by Donna, yet mouthed by Rose. I loved that it cut between the two scenes as if they belonged together. BAD WOLF. Then cue the totally awesome S3 music as the Doctor runs out to find those words ALL OVER THE PLACE. I think my heartbeat went through the roof. Perfection. YAY RTD!!!!!
The next two episodes look amazing as well. It's really exciting seeing so many previous cast members being back for these eps. I'm BEYOND EXCITED that the Torchwood gang is coming!!! Bring it on!!
I've also got so many thoughts and emotions to post for BtVS Season 4 and Angel Season 1. I'm hoping to get to some of them later tonight.
