Memorial Day is one of those holidays that I wish I took more seriously. I know it's supposed to be about honoring our brave soldiers who died while defending our nation. But, it never seems to really be that way. I've been heavily involved in Memorial Day Parades ever since I was very little riding on fire trucks all the way through high school, but in college I just stopped showing up opting instead to sit around home. As of yesterday I had enough of sitting at home and had one those rare urges to be outside and seeing what I could see. So, I actually decided to go to the memorial Day Parade in Farmingdale.
This is an especially strange urge for me to have because I really don't like parades at all and its not like I had anyone to go with. I enjoy marching band because I like playing my horn and I like walking around for long distances. But, sitting there watching the large trucks go by and the classic cars and then people walking in formation is just boring. Bands are pretty good though, but there was only 4 of them. So, I think I like being in parades than actually watching them.
What made the day worth is was that I was able to see a whole lot of people that I haven't seen that much except for holidays since I was a kid. I think I must've saw about 10 people that way not mention other people that were in the parade. One lady, who I really have no clue who I was asked if I was a priest yet.
Oh and I also got a lot of walking in that day since the nearest I could park to Farmingdale was a mile away at Howell High School. And I walked around the Parade route one and a half times when I was finding people I knew. And as I said before I like walking. Strangely enough, I'm not anywhere near as sun burned or thirsty as I should've been.
While walking around I was invited by a family from St. Catherine's to eat at their house for some burgers and hot dogs. So, I agreed figuring it would only be about an hour or two. After many hours of eating, talking, playing bad mitten, watching chickens, teaching a five year old how to say hello in latin and seeing a garden at their house, I finally left. (4 or 5 hours later) They're a very good family oriented family and I had a good time. :)
So, overall it was a good day and it really got me thinking. I want to be a good priest and good priests should be engaged with the people around them. I've spent a good portion of my life just trying to avoid annoying people and I think I've managed to avoid some good people as a result. So, from now on, I think I'm going to be a little more open to the world around me and enjoy a little day light.
So, I hope everyone else's memorial day was just as exciting and God Bless. Tomorrow, I go for my summer assignment!
