How would we recognize true genius in a public person? It is not likely that the word "genius" would come up in the conversation. In fact, we often don't recognize true genius in a public person until years after that genius has retired. Then people begin to observe their legacy. They also take note of the fact that people still speak well of their old boss and give him or her credit for making their own accomplishments possible. Here they say was a public servant, someone who did not inspire fear but lead by example. And what was their genius? They upheld a moral code that respected the rights of others. They knew how to inspire honorable conduct, a devotion to duty, and love of country.

Given how arrogant some of our public officials have become, we may wish to return the custom of an earlier era and hold off on the highest accolades.
