Both of these are in a political community -- and thus some of the comments are likely to be disagreeable to everyone (different comments, of course). Nevertheless, there was more agreement here -- so far -- than is typically the case in that community.

it's an extensive quote from Robert Heinlein's speech on patriotism to the 1973 Naval Academy midshipmen. It's lengthy, but quite good.
The next is
a commentary by me on the oft-misunderstood quote "Patriotism is the last refuge of a scoundrel". In short, it means precisely the opposite the way I see it most frequently used: it's in support of patriotism. Have a look.
