Two posts for the Fourth of July

Both of these are in a political community -- and thus some of the comments are likely to be disagreeable to everyone (different comments, of course). Nevertheless, there was more agreement here -- so far -- than is typically the case in that community.

The first post was by
Melvin_Udall, and it's an extensive quote from Robert Heinlein's speech on patriotism to the 1973 Naval Academy midshipmen. It's lengthy, but quite good.

The next is a commentary by me on the oft-misunderstood quote "Patriotism is the last refuge of a scoundrel". In short, it means precisely the opposite the way I see it most frequently used: it's in support of patriotism. Have a look.

And Happy Fourth of July to all readers and friends, and Happy Independence Day to all Americans and others who celebrate with us.
