For 9/11 and 2/26

Sep 11, 2004 08:23

Three years ago today was the attack
The wake up call that brought three thousand down
Islamist hatred, seething, twisting, black
Had suddenly and grimly come to town

We now mark 9-11 as the date
The US changed so irrevocably
But this is just a minor twist of fate
The first attack was 1993.

That World Trade Center truck bomb did succeed
In killing innocent New Yorkers then
The building held, and minimized the deed
Eight years would pass till it was hit again

Had that succeeded, that first vile attack
Then tens of thousands would have met their ends
Abdul Rahman Yasin worked for Iraq
We seem to miss the message that this sends

Where did he run? Who'd hide and who'd protect
Such evil, such a criminal at large
To Saudi? No, just as you might expect
Saddam Hussein retrieved his wayward charge.

Cell calls to Baghdad as the bombs were made
Yasin arriving, running things on site
Ramsi Yousef's Iraq ties were displayed
Saddam used these two men to press his fight

And so it's February 26
That we should mark as "changing of the world"
The New York FBI, while hardly hicks
Sought "criminals" --- no battle flags unfurled.

So two years later Yousef was the man
To take a dozen planes out of the sky
While crossing oceans --- but we foiled the plan...
Iraq would wait and make another try.

Today we know al Qaida and Iraq
Combined their hatred, coupled their resolve
But it's PC to cut Hussein some slack
And I watch as the politics evolve...
