I'll start with the showings of the Phantom of the Opera at the Palace this weekend.
Last night, as I was holding the trash bag for the emptying theatre, an elderly woman walked up to me, grabbed my arm, and started crying and talking about all of the great times she'd had in the past going to see the live show. It was like when we showed the Notebook, and I had to give hugs to the crying women, as I was crying myself. Sometimes I really like my job.
Friday night I actually got to watch the film. Afterwards, I saw the cutest thing I've ever seen. A mother had brought her little boy to the movie, and at some point during it he must have fallen asleep. He didn't want to wake up as the credits were rolling, so he buried his face in the seat and pouted and fell back asleep. She finally gave up and sat there with him, her head on his, until the music ended and the film finished rolling. It was so adorable.
There was also another couple who stayed seated throughout the entire credits - a dating couple in their early twenties, it looked like, just sitting in the first row holding hands. It was cute, and also a little disappointing, but I was happy for them, whoever they were.
As for the movie itself: It wasn't bad - the stage show is definitely better, and I've only seen the traveling production that comes to Cleveland every once in awhile. I'd love to see it up in Toronto. I love the music for this show, although I don't necessarily like all of Andrew Lloyd Webber's stuff. I also think that Christine is really unfair to the Phantom. I always thought it would be great if they ended up together - or both died in the ending fire at the theatre. I'm guessing that this movie shows a bit more from the novel, because it treats the story as a series of flashbacks. The very ending was kind of cool - with that rose on her stone. I like gothic/romantic 19th century stories like that.

Yesterday morning I headed over to JCU for a meeting of the Association of Physics Teachers that my teacher had invited me to so that I could meet other people who had decided to center their life around physics. I had a nice talk with one of the John Carroll physics profs who described to me what it was like to be a woman in what is probably one of the most male-dominated fields in the country, and also how to 'network' to a job position in academia. I took a tour of their new science building, watched two extremely cute senior physics major boys explain their cryogenics research, and attended a little discussion on the use of applets as a teaching method. I also picked up a cool little astronomy text in a raffle drawing.
I cannot wait for college.
