i had a wonderful--crazy, but wonderful night last night!

i started tutoring at the refugee center again. i really enjoy being around the kids, they've had so much happen in their short little lives and come to the US having to learn a totally new culture, language, and climate... and still work so hard to be successful. i admire them.

right now the RDC (Refugee Development Center) is doing a summer "camp" workshop type thing for the refugee students. each week they study a subject, then at the end of the week they take a field-trip. This was their first week and they learned about government and then yesterday we went to city hall and met the mayor and got a tour of the jail. the kids had fun and learned a lot about what goes on in the mayor's office. although, i feel that many older people don't know how to talk to students who speak english as a second language. they're solution is to just talk to them like they're three years old. which is hard to watch. at some points i wanted to stand up and say "they know english, maybe not as well as you or me--but they understand! you don't have to talk to them like their babies!"

i kept my mouth shut though.

let's see... next weekend i'm going to Florida for a few days. then driving up here with my mom who is going to help my brother pack his shit so he can move to florida for a few weeks then head to the university of texas for grad school. i'm excited for him, and i'm very excited to go visit him in austin. i hear austin is VERY different than the rest of texas--which is a good thing, because i just can't picture greg living anywhere in texas!

once he moves, i'll be the only one of the four of us in michigan. how strange!
