Group project? Spock fanmix
I never really understood the point of fanmixes until I heard stoney321's fanmix for the character Connor from Angel. This fanmix worked for me because the songs weren't about Connor over-all; they were about specific moments in Connor's life. Maybe most fanmixes are like that (please point me to the ones that are), but the ones I've heard and seen tend to be general songs about who the character is over-all or how someone feels about a 'ship. Stoney's, OTOH, mix gave me specific things I could recognize and connect to.
There are soft, thoughtful songs about family in the beginning, at Connor's birth. Then there are loud scary songs about torture and survival, when Connor goes to a Hell dimension. But the songs have less concrete references to what was going on in these moments of the characters life, than they do interpretations of what was going on. I mean, a song doesn't have to sound like hell to be about Hell. Anyway, when I listen to this fanmix, I feel like I'm getting the story of the character, and for me it's as cool as watching the show. I love this fanmix, and am eternally grateful to Stoney for making it.
Another thing arranging the fanmix by moments in the character's life does is make the mix extremely varied. There's classical music, church music, Johnny Cash, Metallica, and Radiohead on this mix. This mix also introduced me to songs and artists and covers that I hadn't heard before. I've always wished I could have this fanmix experience for other characters I know and love, and then I started thinking--if we opened this up we could get some really diverse choices for pieces that fit a character, AND we could introduce each other to new music.
So, I'm going to open up Spock Prime (dirty) for suggestions. I thought he'd be a cool one to start with, since you could include both TOS and Reboot flavors in there. I also thought that if people have fun with this, it could be a meme type thing, and there could be posts for every character. Below I've got a list of events/periods in Spock Prime's life. The list isn't a list only of specific events, but of periods in Spock's life. So I don't have "the time where a young Vulcan teased Spock about his mom and Spock punched him!" on the list, but I've got "Spock's troubled childhood, in which he is teased and bullied about his heritage" on the list.
I thought we could just toss in suggestions for one song or another for the items on the list--however many songs you want for however many items. If you have a song suggestion, it'd be awesome if you put what time in Spock Prime's life you think it could match up with. You could even do a "here's why" type explanation if you were feeling so inspired, or wanted to discuss/debate it with others. It'd also be cool if you had a link to some site where we could hear all or part of the song for those who haven't heard it. Then we'd be able to talk about it and react to it. But please don't link to illegal downloads of songs.
But the goal in this isn't to come out with one final ultimate fanmix--I think that'd be way too hard. People have different feelings about different songs, and stuff. The point is to discuss points in the character's life, share interpretations about those moments, and share and discover new (and old) music together. So bring on ye classical, ye hard rock and sea chanties, ye lullabies and rap and New Age. Give us your country and your hip-hop and your heavy metal, your grunge and your swing. Yay?
