2006 Fic Roundup

Castaways. This was for an in-the-comments fic challenge type sort of thing, which made it really easy to write--no pressure! This is actually the kind of piece I wish I could write more often, because it makes me happy. Short, with a bit of smut, not lacking in meaning or metaphor, but not so stressful or ponderous.

Cave In, Hand Over, Hang On. This is a drabble that expresses all my latent Angel/Xander desires. The idea(s) in it were actually a big part of a big Angel meta I did. Sometimes fic helps organize thoughts!

Conceit(s). This was for the IWRY Marathon. I think I've talk enough recently about my intentions with it and the outcome, actually, so I'll just use this spot here to wish it good riddance!

Five Ways NFA Probably Didn't End: Parts 1-3, Parts 4-5. This is the deepest, most complex, most "out there" thing I've ever tried to write, either fanfic-wise or original. It ended up being a lot more about writing and structure and metaphors-for-the-characters, rather than the characters themselves, but in the end it actually did satisfy my need to write a directly-post-NFA fic.

How Far The Apple Falls. This fic parallels the part in "Angel" where Darla tries to get Angel to kill Buffy to the part in "Inside Out" where Darla tries to get Connor not to kill the sacrifice for Cordelia to have Jasmine. I get lots of thoughts like that, about parallels moments and scenes that speak to each other, but I usually try to save them for bigger pieces. Something like this is more just an idea than a story, and while ideas are always nice, I enjoy reading them less, I guess.

In The Name Of The Father. Wesley in segments. Each segment deals with Wesley through someone he's slept with/is interested in sleeping with/similar. This is actually the piece I'm proudest of writing this year. I didn't angst over it like I do over most things. I wrote it in a night and had no expectations of what it would be when I started it. I ended up with exactly what I wanted, which I think was a meta on Wesley and why I love him so goddamn much.

No Need For Cake Or Flowers. This is a period, Spike/Dru atmospheric sketch. It's a lot like reading a poem, or a song, or most likely scat. I actually wrote it 'cause I couldn't get the title song out of my head, and had to write something down before I went batty.

Prerequisites. This is a poem. Closest to Aus/B I'll probably ever go. As I hate writing poetry and feel that I suck at it, I'm very surprised by how well I like this.

Slayerfest 2048. This is a BuffyandFaith drabble, my very first drabble ever. I'm extremely pleased with it.

Ten Things That Pull Apart And One Thing That Holds Together. This is a post-NFA B/A anti-epic. The characters, the 'verse, and thusly so much of the fic involved is Epic, or Deep, or Epic And Deep. It's all serious and life-threatening and plural of apocalypsey. This fic is the antithesis of that--B/A fighting over the bathroom, etc--but also just another mark underlining that. For Buffy and Angel, after all, a fight over the bathroom would never be just a fight over the bathroom.

Walk Like Men. This is a BuffyandConnor thing that was supposed to parallel B/A--with Connor sometimes playing Buffy while Buffy plays Angel, and at other times Connor playing Angel and Buffy playing Buffy. I'm not sure I was that successful with that aspect of the piece . . . Anyway, it's actually just the beginning of something I still hold out hopes for: a much longer B/C piece.

War Stories: Raising The Banner and Throwing Down The Gauntlet. This was a series I started about a post-Apocalyptical world centering on Angel, Spike, and Connor, if the ep "Origins" never happened. I have the third fic sitting on my computer, and it needs a complete overhaul--but I also have ideas for about 10 more fics to follow it, too! The first two (and parts of the third) were some of the funnest writing I did this year, and I still have pretty high hopes for doing the rest of what I've got planned. If I can just get over this slump I'm in . . .
