Should I ask why you need a horse ankle?

It's to talk about whale evolution.

I think I might do another TRYING SCIENCE post on that. I learn so many cool things at work.

Oh, you should!

(I was secretly hoping that you were trying out new show fashions for horses.)

You should do whatever job that guy in your icon does. THE JOB OF SCIENCE.

'Tis the Master, from Doctor Who! Specifically, the first Master and, I think, best. He is definitely a mad scientist.

The bones or the whole thing?

And the fetlock, right? Not the pastern?

I need the bones, but I'm afraid this guy is gonna give me flesh :o( Not sure I can use it if he does, because I don't have a pot big enough to boil the flesh off. Also, gross.

Nope, I need the astralgus, which is part of the hock. Ungulate legs are weird!

Ah! The actual homologue of the ankle, then! Not the part commonly thought of as the ankle!

They are weird.

(Until I was 13/14, I wanted to be a large animal vet.)

Yes! omg, I had to research just to figure out where the ankle was. Because of course I think of the ankle as the fetlock. Which, it's alright to call it the ankle, because of how it looks and where it is, but I was looking at the talus of another animal and thinking, "Okay, but where is that?" and had no idea ungulate feet were arranged so differently. It's pretty cool, though.

My uncle is a horse vet! I think it's super cool, but I read too much James Harriot when I was young, with the arm-up-to-the-elbow-in-you-know-what. Have you ever watched the tv series? I just saw part of it for the first time a couple years ago. It's so cute!
