DelHarbor leads Augustus into the same lab from before, still trying to apologize. "This won't take long, I shouldn't think."
augie> All right.
augie> Do I need to lie down again? *looking much less, but still quite nervous, being in a lab*
Del> Yes. I'm really sorry, but to do anything with your spine, I have to put you under again. Have you eaten today?
augie> Um... not really. *he slipped his coat off, dropping it into a nearby chair, and pulled his shirt off as well.
Del> She patted the low surgical table. "Your shirt too. I promise, this'll be as easy as I can make it." If he was very, very observant, he might notice that she is just so slightly tense.
augie> He was way too tense himself to notice much. He dropped the shirt alongside the coat, and as an afterthought, slipped his goggles off as well.
augie> "Yeah, I know. I just hate to keep asking for help..." He stretched out on the table on his belly, resting on his elbows and watching her. His black hair fell in whisps over his brow and into his eyes.
Del> She untangled the straps of a breathing mask and let him put it on himself, turning to ready a syringe. "It's alright. Told you, I don't mind at all."
augie> He hated masks. They poked memories he liked to keep locked up. But he pulled it on, running his hands through his hair, still nervous. "I know," he said, his voice muffled.
Del> Del swabbed the inside of his elbow. "If you want to pay me back, how about taking me out to dinner tonight, after we finish?"
augie> He blinked, watching her. "You'd go out with me? I'm... well. You know." He smiled shyly, referring to his cybernetics.
Del> She smiled crookedly at him. "And I'm a cyclops in a wheelchair. What's the problem?"
augie> "Awh. No you're not. You're pretty. And really nice. And smart."
Del> She smiled, looking down. "Flatterer. Let's get this over with, and maybe we'll have time for a movie, too."
augie> "Heh. I haven't seen a movie in a theater in years. Not since Rosie and I..." He let the thought go and sighed, placing his head in the rest and trying to settle into a comfortable position, his arm extended for Del's needle. He stared at the floor, trying to block out the feel of the mask against his skin and the dryness of his throat.
Del> She made the injection, soothing the site with a thumb as she pulled the needle out and threw it away. "Spell out the alphabet backwards," she told him. "You'll be out before you reach A."
augie> He closed his eyes. "Z, Y, X, W, V... U... t.... s......."
Del smiled as he faded. And it wasn't a nice smile. "Welcome home, Project Augustus."
augie> His eyes opened wide as he heard the last, and he struggled against the medication. His hand twitched, reaching for her, but it relaxed completely. He lost the fight and fell asleep.
