Today a woman was talking to my friend and I. The conversation went like this:

Woman: What are your plans for after the summer?
Me: Well, I took a year off of school last year and am going to take another one, actually I don't really have plans to go back. I'm happy writing my novel and planning to go to Australia for four months to live with my best friend. Eventually, I'd like to open my own bed and breakfast or a coffee shop, but who knows.
Woman: Oh. What about you?
My friend: I'm going to a school in Colorado. I'm going to join a sorority, but I'm not sure what I'm going to do.
Woman: Man, that is so wonderful. Good luck with that. Good for you for furthering your education. It is always so sad to see someone not grasping onto their opportunities. And you'll have so much fun being at a big school. It's so awesome that you had the guts to leave Arizona and do something bigger than yourself.
(pause)
Oh, I wasn't referring to you, Kelly. I just meant... well... I mean.. you know.

I've never felt so small in my entire life. Please think before you speak. Just because I have not taken the conventional pathway of life, or the pathway that you agree with, just check yourself. I am not made of steel, and it does hurt. I know that many people disapprove of the way I've gone about things, but I'm not stupid, and I've done things for a reason.
