OOC: Notes and disambiguation

Feb 27, 2010 19:41

So. Since Reid's definitely up and about and active, I thought I should post a few notes about him, how I play him, 'verses, etc.

Reid is loud. Troublesome. Obnoxious. Noisy. Nosy. Creative. But also reliable, with a very good sense of right and wrong (which he often employs very oddly), extremely observant, and very clever.

In all 'verses, he continues his education and becomes a doctor (internist). And a good one, at that. And yet the whole process of studying seems almost effortless with him, or, at least, it doesn't slow him down in any way.

Reid's parents are Joseph and Dr. Meredith Garwin. They used to be greatly in love; by the time Reid was about five, most of that had faded away, between Meredith emerging controlling character and Joseph's gentler, quieter, but money-and-Power-backed-up state. While nothing physical ever happens, and few outright insults are ever spoken, Meredith is an abusive parent, and a lot of how Reid is, including his frequently negative reactions to authority, is based on that fact.

For all his extroversion and loudness, there is a whole lot that Reid keeps in, mostly because of repeated and enforced through his childhood stance that his feelings and wants and thoughts are unimportant. On the other hand, he is well aware that lack of communication, both listening and letting the other person know what is going on, is a big part of how his parents' marriage/love broke, and when he is committed, he rarely makes that mistake. (That is part of why many of his relationships fail, too - he just comes in too strongly.)

He is one of the Sons of Ipswich. Old money that he has mostly sufficient access to through his childhood and teens, and full access to after he comes of age. He also has Powers, magic which is pretty versatile, but the cost of using it is taking away from his life, aging with each time he accesses it.

He is very, very observant. He listens and watches, and he hears and sees things that go way beyond the surface of communication. He might not always act upon it, but he knows people way better than tends to be comfortable for them.

He draws. Few people actually know that, and fewer yet are those that he's actually told it to or shown his work to.

He hates bullies. While his pranks tend to be rather general, bullies he will target in particular, even when that will mean trouble for him.

There is little quiet or peace around Reid. Most of the time. Unless it's actually needed. One could blame his coffee addiction for it, but, really, that's just one of the symptoms, not the cause.

And he is very, very devoted. Very loyal to his friends, and to his partner, even if - as mos of his relationships are - the partnership is really short-term. He opens himself, over and over again. And he gets hurt. In only one 'verse he reaches the bottom of his usually-seeming inexhaustible energy (and then, it's really really bad).

Reid is also bisexual. Somewhat more inclined towards women (i.e., he will notice a girl/woman based on appearance alone, as somebody to hit on, while guys need to pique his interest first, and then he'll check them out. He's enthusiastic and fun in bed (or table, floor, against the wall, under the shower, on the pool table, against a tree... you catch the drift) - there are no complaints of him, in that department.

Interactions with other versions of canonmates will be presumed open/other 'verse (until/unless another 'verse gets discussed and defined). Interactions with other characters will probably default to one or another of these; if another player has preferences which 'verse s/he wants their muse to play with Reid in, feel free to let me know.

Verses:
There's more information about the 'verses on Caleb's journal here, but a few relevant notes.

Yay girls/Divergence:
Pogue = lieutenantwitch, Caleb = theirgoldenboy, Tyler = their_babyboy, Chase = broken_circles, Ginny = lilginnygirl, Irene = shecan_fix_that, Alya (no journal), Bea (no journal), Dee = ihasataser, Sarah = astrayinadream, Isabel (using Ginny's journal/no journal).
SO (eventually): Alya
All four boys go to Harvard; Chase has his first run-in with Ginny in high school, then again when it turns out they both go to Brown. After Ginny informs Chase that she's pregnant with his child, he returns to Ipswich, and the five Sons of Ipswich are eventually, slowly, reunited.
After Harvard, Reid goes to med school, where he meets Alya; the spark is there between them since their first meeting, but he's basically too upset and missing his friends at the beginning to actually hit on her. They take it slow, but by the end of his first semester they are very decidedly hooked.
Second year, he finds himself rooming with Chase, which at first scares him, but between Reid's loudmouth, absurd, and hilarious extrovertism and Chase's determination (and the support he has for it) to do better, they end up getting along surprisingly well.
Events unfold further; they deal with Alya's past, everybody's present; and slowly step into a future, not without its problems, but with plenty of people that each of them can rely on. In these two 'verses, Reid finds out something about his mother because of which he basically brings her down.

Pile of Puppies
Tyler = their_babyboy, Pogue = lieutenantwitch, Caleb = theirgoldenboy. The play with Tony 6thseasonbuffy, and respectively Henry almostaprince, and anyone else at confessioncafe, is mostly in this 'verse. Vienna has no journal yet. Dee ihasataser also makes occasional appearances here.
SO: Tyler and Vienna. (Yes, a three-way arrangement.)
Pogue and Caleb for a while resolves itself into Pogue-and-Caleb-and-Reid-and-Tyler, and eventually into Pogue/Caleb and Reid/Tyler, after Reid's difficult admission of his feelings for Tyler.
Reid again goes to med school, except this time, he and Tyler choose to go to the same school for graduate study (Tyler, of course, doesn't do med school, but they choose a place where both of them can pursue their respective educations.) There, they meet Vienna, and the triangle balances among them.
Chase doesn't return to the lives of the other four boys, in this 'verse. Presumably, he never meets Ginny and basically self-destructs.

Cliffs of Insanity
Tyler = their_babyboy, Pogue = lieutenantwitch, Caleb = theirgoldenboy, Chase = broken_circles, Anya (no journal), Kate (no journal), Marc (no journal), Mary (no journal).
SO: Anya (eventually)
This is our screwed-up 'verse which has some sort of stability, but it teeters right on the edge of the cliffs of insanity. Pogue is with Kate; Caleb is with Chase (who had his first run-in with Ginny, which shook him, but never met her again, so he never got her pregnant). Reid and Tyler again go to grad school together, although their feelings for each other are somewhat less clearly declared, but during one of the semesters when Reid needs to go away to specialization, Tyler meets and falls in love with Marc. (Which has a three-year run of a relationship, then Marc leaves, and later comes back again and, unlike in Girls/Divergence, Tyler takes him back in.)
Reid's string of failed relationships continues, and he starts trying to change, to accommodate some of the criticism people have leveled on him through the years. There's a time when he basically stops Using altogether, completely, although that doesn't help with the next relationship, either, and when he comes across a patient whose condition is complicated in such a way that her chronic hopeless disorder makes impossible alleviation of a current infection, he basically explodes and Uses generously to heal the current problem. Her daughter, Anya, sees him and asks about it.
The big Using after a while of abstinence basically pushes Reid all the way down to a state which is completely untypical for him, withdrawn, broken. It scares his boys a lot; they 'flock' around him and start giving him a bit of a boost; Anya also keeps talking with him, drawing him out. Among all of them, he gradually steadies; the bright spark rekindles, and he slowly starts gathering up momentum again. It's never quite the same, but he recovers most of his personality.
And then Anya starts showing early symptoms of the same disorder which whithered her mother to her end. Before she has a chance to be assured of it, and before it's fully diagnosed, he makes another major Using, and heals her, removing the danger. He taps into their powers deeply enough that the aging is visible, including gray hairs and lines. Making everybody worried for him all over again.

Discoveries
Tyler = their_babyboy, Pogue = lieutenantwitch, Caleb = stillnothim, Chase = needmorepower
SO: Tyler
'verse begins after Caleb has a one-time fling with a bar girl, and after the way he's hurt Sarah (who splits with him because of it) and a pregnancy scare, he decides to go celibate. Because having a child would be a bad, bad idea.
Except, his boys do... some fixing on him.
... and Caleb ends up on a date with Pogue.
Chase is really heavily addicted to using, and after some conversations with Caleb, they decide to attempt something like cold turkey for Chase, try to tone him down to more contained - and slower-aging - Use of power. The four start to do research, before heading to Harvard, of how to do it safely and effectively.
Somewhere around bouncing around everything (including his friend from New York, Lucy McClane), Reid ends up in a conversation with Tyler after which the two of the are boyfriends. To Reid's... continual surprise. At that point, he still doesn't realize how important that is for him.
