As many of you have mentioned, I was in Italy for the World Cup. We were In Rome when they made it into the finals and we heard thecheering and honking for quite some time. The night of the final gamebetween Italy and France we were in Florence. We watched the game awhile in the room and then Kelsey and I went out to find something toeat and then a pub where we could watch the rest of the game. Wewalked outside the hotel and the streets were completely empty. Everything was closed. The only sound was the game which could beheard through open windows. I wished I had my good camera, I could have gotten some amazing shots of the city without any people in the way.
We finally found a place that was open and I ordered a sandwich. While we were waiting for it to heat up we hear the cheers and we new Itally had won the game. We were near the center of the city by then and soon it started to fill with people. Somewhere, I still don't know where, they were showing the game on a thirty foot screen. All of the people that were watching it there started flooding into the city, it was almost like a parade. Again I was disappointed that I didn't have my good camera, but I had my small one.
People were euphoric. Everyone was singing and dancing and hugging everyone in sight. They were climbing on cars and up the sides of buildings. People were flying and wearing the flag. It was like nothing I had ever seen.
When the festivities died down Kelsey and I headed to a pub near the hotel and spent the rest of the evening drinking, eating victory cake, and talking to people who barely spoke English. It was great.
