questions in the grocery store checkout line

Person in front of me in line at the grocery store: "are you from New York?"

Mentally - "What, why are you asking that? We have no accent and no signs on our foreheads that we just moved to CA from New York."
Oh, you guessed because my kid is wearing a Mets t-shirt. Kids pipe up and add that we moved from upstate town in NY not NYC.

"was your husband a professor at Famous College associate with small upstate town, NY?"
"No, he was a research scientist there."
"what kind of scientist?"
"Astronomy."

"Oh have you ever met Famous TV Astronomer?"
"Actually it's funny you should ask this because I have met Famous TV Astronomer once."
I've also met astronomers who are sometimes on TV but they don't have their own shows.

At this point the checker looks up, she's been listening in on this whole exchange without comment, "I really like Famous TV Astronomer's show, it's great!"

And there you have it. You can take me out of the small town but I'll keep on having interactions with people that make you think, "small town."
