Last week was the first week of school (only four days due to Labor day) and this week is our first week of school with everything added in. Consequently I'm in SCHOOL mode so I thought I'd share some things that I'm really happy about ( Read more... )

I was pretty sold on the book, when I suddenly had this thought, "Amy told me about this." and I then felt relieved that I was on the right track.

I'm not sure that I'll see any of my other kids accelerate themselves through math the way Samuel has. He's always self taught with math and last year, he suddenly did 3 semesters worth of Singapore math, finishing Singapore Year 6 and finishing up early in the year. To finish out the year, I found some kind of wacky geometry book for elementary schoolers that was all about doing constructions using a compass and a straight edge and he made his way through that too.

Isaac is keeping pace with the Singapore math. He's always been level with it, first grade = 1A and 1B, and so on. But this year he's suddenly seeming more confident with it. We'll see what his path looks like. I feel like I've got good options.

The university run math program sounds awesome. But its not every kid that wants to devote themselves to that. Yours may still opt in that direction but it's understandable if they don't.

My goal right now is to do as much AOPS (the 6th -10th grade set) as possible before Samuel hits high school and then just let him go from there. I think the best part of it will be that he sees that there is a much bigger picture to math than the usual high school fare (I didn't know about the bigger picture at all. thought I liked math til I hit Caltech). Our plan is also for our boys to attend high school but if for some reason they don't, I at least have a math curriculum :)
