Ooooh, two posts in two weeks, how extraordinary. Obviously I should come to Johnathan's work (to wait for him while he works late) more often. Things since last time...

- My very first apple pie went over quite well at Thanksgiving with the inlaws. In fact, one of the picky eaters asked for a second piece (not picky due to flavours, but due to what she "can and can't" eat due to unconfirmable allergies). There was about a quarter of a pie left, but it sat in my fridge for...just over a week, and I decided to throw it out.

- We had the birthday party for Mom on Saturday. It went over quite well, about 15 people (besides the immediate family) came by throughout the day. My sister and I figured Mom would hurt us mightily for having this little surprise gathering, but she actually had a good time. As we were leaving for the Keg for dinner, Mom told me that no, it's not the party part that she didn't want - she doesn't mind parties with family in someone's house. It's the idea of going out to dinner with a big group and having a big attention-getting to-do in front of a bunch of strangers. This explains why she was pooh-poohing the idea of us taking her to the Keg for dinner. She was afraid we'd get them to sing and make a big deal. When the party happened instead, she must have been relieved :).

- Speaking of the Keg. Because we were such a large group (12 of us, I think), our server had to get help from a couple other people to bring our appetizers and dinner to the table. Well, when one of these servers came by the table, I did a double take. He looked really familiar to me, but I didn't get a close enough look at him to confirm my suspicions. When he came by the table again, I was able to get a good look at him, and was almost positive he was the brother of someone I went to middle/senior public/whatever school with. Yes, that would mean that the last time I saw this guy, or his brother, was about 15 years ago. Yikes. Anyway, I noticed that he had a look of recognition on his face, although I wasn't sure if he could place me. After dinner I talked to one of the hostesses, and she confirmed it was who I thought it was, and got him to come out. He did remember me, so we chatted a bit about his brother (since his brother is the one I knew). Turns out he's working in the US doing IT stuff. I asked him to tell him I say hi. I really wish I had a business card of some kind, or at least that I thought to write down my email address. It would be really cool to talk to him again, just to catch up. And NOT because I had a bit of a crush on him in grade 8. :)

- I have an eye doctor's appointment tomorrow, so I've decided to take the day off completely. I can supplement the missed day of work with money from the vacation fund Randstad collects for me each paycheque, enough that it'll be as if I didn't miss a day at all. Which reminds me, I should do that. Anyway, this is a good thing. I wear contacts every day (oh, how I love my contacts), and only use my glasses in the mornings and evenings. This is why I figured I could get away with not changing my glasses prescription since 1998 or so. For comparison, my glasses are a -6 in one eye and -6.5 in the other (I'm near-sighted), and my actual prescription is -9 in one eye and -9.5 in the other. Soooo. You can see why I don't wear my glasses as much as I probably should, considering it's better for my eyes. The problem is, I basically have to choose between them due to the cost of my glasses (last time it was close to $600 for not-terribly-expensive frames and lenses). I'm hoping that we can bite the bullet and get them this time around, and get J's insurance to cover at least part of it. If only I was working somewhere with insurance as well, we could go through both and get most of it covered. Eesh. Damned eyes!

Oh, and no word from any of my agencies on new job postings. This makes me sad.
