Have I mentioned that I'm taking SOC216: Sex & Gender, this summer session? I figured it would be a fairly simple class and it is. What I didn't figure is that a majority of the class would drive me up the wall.
(Now a quick disclaimer: sometimes I forget what a raging, crazy, leftist, radical I am because I am constantly surrounding myself with even crazier leftists radicals which make me look tame in comparison.)
Today, in my class, we had a talk about feminism and the different types, what makes people a feminist, etc. It was pretty standard information, most of which I'd learned in other classes several times over already. Unfortunatley for the rest of the class, this was mainly new material. What made me really mad was as we were going around the room discussing the reading and several feminist quotes, not a SINGLE female student in the class said that they call themselves a feminist (although, oddly, there were several guys who did)!!!!!!! WHAT!!!!!?!?!?!?
I was just so frustrated. I tried talking about the meaning of the word and it's connotation over time, different systems of oppression and inequality, and even about my own views on labeling myself as a feminist. Nothing got through. UGH. I was so frustrated that I just stormed out of class afterwards.
I know I'm a ridiculous progressive, but it really grates my cheese when opressed people refuse to take a stand for themselves.
