Ross Andrew McGinnis

You may be surprised to learn that among my favorite songs is Where Have All The Flowers Gone? by Pete Seege. One line "where have all the young men gone" is followed in theme by "gone to graveyards." While most soldiers make it home, I was surfing and in an odd chain (Willie Johnston, youngest MoH awardee, age 13 during the Civil War) I encountered the biography of Ross A McGinnis.  http://www.army.mil/medalofhonor/mcginnis/

Death may create a halo, but something tells me this young man - clowing, life-of-the-party and ordinary guy - had charms to overbalance the now-invisible faults. I don't really think I would sacrifice myself the way he did. To his family's pain, when the moment's choice came, his was to protect his compatriots.

May he be long well remembered.
