Update from the Amy side ... and some Dominica pics

Street:
Last night, Dan and I bought Street a harness for riding in the car, and this morning, we put it to good use. I took Street to his first vet appointment at The Animal Hospital at Mount Lookout Square, and he checked out great. I am now the proud owner of heartworm pills, flea pills, and a stool sample kit. Woohoo! I'm hoping to convince Dan to do the stool sample bit.

Street and I have had ups and downs. I am not used to being constantly attentive to someone. Yesterday, I left him alone downstairs (out of his crate) for 5 minutes, and by the time I got back he'd unplugged my computer chord, dragged it to the floor, chewed up a paper towel into shreds, and taken the remote off the couch and slobbered it up on the floor. And this all happened while I was having an emotional breakdown over another project (that I was trying desperately to get in the mail for mother's day, and which was not going well).

All in all, he's a very well behaved dog. Just VERY curious. And VERY smart. We signed him up for training at PetSmart, starting on May 22nd, which I hope will help us tame a bit of the curiosity. We're already on our second set of food/water dishes (he played with, tipped and spilled the water dish every time he drank out of the first set), and our second water dish for his crate (he figured out how to snap the previous crate water dish out of the bolted attachment and flip it over by the forth day of use).

Other times he's very sweet, and great to have around. And having the stairs mastered makes things much nicer.

Dan taught him to bark. Can you believe that? Street didn't make a peep until Dan barked at him. Street barked back. And now he barks. Just a single "Rrrrough!" when he's in his crate ... sometimes one every few minutes. Sometimes in response to a sound of the house shifting, or the wind. But still. My husband taught my dog to bark. How crazy is that?

Dominica:
Part 2 coming soon. For now, here are a few pictures.

Here is Dominica, West Indies (orange arrow is pointing to the name, which is to the left of the island).

We stayed in Portsmouth, near the Ross University campus. We were right on the beach, and a 5 minute walk from my sister and brother in law's apartment.

A papaya tree was just outside our cabin. Dave tried to convince us it was an "island cucumber" but we were too quick for his trickster ways. The landscape was so lush - on the path to and from our cabin each day, we passed a starfruit tree, two banana trees, and a few other papaya trees... not to mention a number of lizards and crabs which came to visit on occasion. Oh, and the beach was less than 100 feet from our front door! If you walk straight down the path in the picture, you'll walk right across the black sand and into the water.

In this view from Fort Shirley, you can see across the water to near where our cabin was (we were a bit over to the right from the land that is shown). Fort Shirley is on a little jut-out of land off the main island, and we could see it from the beach in front of our cabin.

On our trek into the mountains/rainforest, we went to the emerald pool, and swam at the base of the waterfall. If you look closely at this picture, you'll see our guide sitting in the waterfall in his underwear.

In my next post, I'll share more about all these places. Hope you all have sweet dreams this evening.
