Тринидад находится всего в десяти километрах от побережья Венесуэлы, но благодаря английскому языку и британскому колониальному прошлому принадлежит не Латинской Америке, а англо-американскому культурному сообществу. До конца 50х тринидадцы были подданными Английской короны, и британская королевская семья является одной из любимых тем калипсо (Roaring Lion - Coronation of Queen Elizabeth, Kitchener - Festival of London, Lord Invader - Prince Rupert, Lord Caresser - Love Alone AKA King Edward VIII *), причем упоминается в уважительных и доброжелательных тонах; Британия же поставляла в Тринидад губернаторов (см. Псевдонимы большинства calypsonians отражают уважение к титулам: Prince Buster, Duke of Iron, King Radio, и бессчетное множество Лордов - Lord Creator, Lord Composer, Lord Intruder, Lord Flea и т.д.
