The philosopher Nick Bostrum investigated the possibility that we may be living in a simulation.  A simplified version of his argument is:

i. It is possible that a civilization could create a computer simulation which contains individuals with artificial intelligence.ii. Such a civilization

Yeah, the Matrix is to the theory of simulated reality what Braveheart is to William Wallace, or what the DaVinci Code is to New Testament apocrypha. You almost can't discuss one now without mentioning the other.
