I debuted my first piece for Symphonic Band, "The Redemption of Monte Cristo," last night at the Spring Band Concert. I thought it went really well. We played it about as well as we ever have, and I'm very proud of the piece. It is probably my single greatest musical achievement thus far. Apparently Gretto hated it, but whatevs. He also hated Gavorkna Fanfare and Symphony No. 4, and if he hated those songs as well, it's obviously not based on musicality, since those are simply fantastic pieces of music, but on something else. I don't know what it is, but those pieces are amazing musical achievements, and so I'm not too worried about my piece being lumped with them.
Ian, from band camp, was subbing in our band class today (he just graduated from the MSU College of Music), and he said he's seen plenty of 3rd and 4th year students as well as grad students that can't write pieces with as much detail as mine had, which was an incredible compliment. He loved it, and said it was remarkable for even someone out of college to write a piece like that.
In more depressing news, Mr. Emerson has killed me. The Marching show for next year...is Danny Elfman. The show I've been telling him to do for 3 years, he chooses to do as soon as I leave. They're doing Pee-Wee's Big Adventure, The Nightmare Before Christmas, Edward Scissorhands (my favorite movie theme EVER, makes me almost cry every damn time), and Augustus Gloop, from Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. UGGGHH, WHAT DID I EVER DO TO HIM????
Oh yeah, and Commando Friday is coming up! Wahoo!
