10 years
Yesterday was bryan and I's 10 year anniversary. it feels like it has not been 10 years and then it feels like forever all at once. I got him a car!!! a brand new HHR. he was shocked and i guess now excited. he got me a beautiful, beautiful 3 stone diamond ring. he wants me to look at better ones since he bought it seven months ago, but i don't think i want another one. i may look out of curiousity, but i really love what he picked.
bryan and leslie story:
1995 - mandy (sholanda) whom I hadn't seen in quite a long time, sees me at my job at Kinko's and tells me that her "friend Bryan also works at Kinko's on the south side." I think, "that's interesting" and don't really think about it again.
January 1997 - I leave the University of Oklahoma and move back in with my parents. i transfer to the kinko's on the "south side" and I'm working with this guy named bryan. (and, no, it did not occur to me at that time it was the same Bryan mandy had told me about). we soon realize that we both know mandy though. small world :)
March 1997 - officially together after bryan kicks long term crazy girlfriend out of his place and i break up with my married-getting-divorced-10-years-older-than-me-boyfriend who also happens to be named bryan.
October 25 1997 - we elope to New Orleans after seven months of dating. the "proposal" was Bryan and I at whitehall diamonds at crossroads mall in oklahoma where he says to me "these rings look like stars in the sky, let's get married." bryan finds the bed and breakfast we get married at online which turns out to be an old confederate general's home in the middle of a ghetto. it was very strange. on the way to the ceremony, we stopped at a flower shop to get flowers and when the gay florist asked what we were doing and I tell him we are getting married he says, "oh girl, not with your hair looking like that!" and he takes me in the back room and pins my hair up with baby's breath. immediately after the ceremony we go to rick's strip club on bourbon street. it was fantastic.
December 1997 - i tell my parents we are married. they are shocked but love bryan so also very happy. we buy a house too in oklahoma city.
july 1999 - we have an official wedding (mostly because I want the pictures and the dress!). some of the family at the wedding do not know we are already married (and to this day do not know). my mother is strange about this and keeping this secret. by this time, bryan has joined the band the mimsies. this deicision would change the complete direction of our lives.
March 2000 - we sell our house and bryan leaves with the band to move to Los Angeles. wow. i would have never been able to tell you this would have happened to me. i joined him in May after i completed the semester at OU.
March 2000 to summer 2002 - we live in different apartments with revolving members of the band. they leave for tours for extended amounts of time. i end up getting into property management.
summer 2002 - bryan's parents move out here and we (and a couple of memebers of the band) move in with them.
spring 2003 - the mimsies break up. we go back and forth between staying in LA and moving back to Oklahoma. it was a hard time and we were so undecided.
july 2004 - Nixon Scott Showalter was born. the single, most beautiful thing of our lives. i begin to move up more at work. this LA thing may work.
march 2007 - we finally live on our own for the first time since 2000. we buy a house!!
october 25 2007 - ten years and we love each other more than ever. it's been a wonderful exciting journey and i wouldn't change a thing.
