Many big things are afoot in my life at the moment. This seems like a good time to announce that boyfriend and I are quitting our jobs in August and just bought one way tickets to Alaska at the start of September. AS YOU DO. From there we will work our way south. To Argentina. AS YOU DO.
I know, I know, I have spent the past four years travelling on and off, but boyfriend hasn't and desperately wants to, and what was I going to do, let him go by himself? After this I will be a proper grown up who owns furniture and stays in one place for a while, at least I really hope so.
We will be spending a relatively small slice of time in the US, because a) both of us have been there quite recently, and b) the US is expensive and Central America is cheap so we can afford to spend more time there. But I will alert any of you ASAP if I will be in your neck of the woods.
Also with all of this happening, this week it was decided that it only makes sense for me to move my stuff to boyfriend's apartment before we go to Europe in six weeks, because why are we paying two lots of rent when we spend every night together anyway? Amidst all the discussions with housemates and bemoaning how I'll have a crappy commute for a few months, I almost missed that this means I am moving in with my boyfriend. ARGHHH! Though it doesn't seem like that big a deal compared to the travelling thing. After doing this trip together we're either going to have to break up or get married, there is no alternative.
Nah, the original concept was to buy a car and drive something like this, but it turns out it's insanely hard as a foreigner to have a car in the Americas, specifically the US. Because you can't have insurance if you're not registered to a US address or something like that. I don't remember the specifics because the research was done a while ago, but I know it was ruled out as a possibility unfortunately.
OH MY GOD - that is going to be such an amazing trip!! How are you going to be getting around? Car? Train? And how long do you think it will take to get down to Argentina? Will you be keeping a blog of some sort on this adventure?
That is so cool and I am really impressed that you are just taking off from your jobs like that. And you are moving in together! Wow!
Thanks! :D it's going to be nuts. We will be getting around by a combination of plane, train and automobile. When the trip was first conceived boyfriend wanted to get a car and drive the whole way, but due to boring legal things like insurance and registration it was impossible. We will be travelling very light, just with carry-on luggage, which will make things much easier on the road but is also a fun challenge for the girl who packed about fifteen dresses for her four month trip a couple of years ago. All up we are looking at eight to nine months of travel. And I will definitely be keeping a blog! Stay tuned!
So much stuff is happening, travel, moving in, you are totally getting married :P
Here's me finally taking the step of telling my parents I have a new 'friend' and your moving in and travelling together. Good luck with everything. I might leave my job when I get back from my trip but definitely not for the same reason you are.
Haha, well don't worry, I was only sheepishly telling my mum that I was "seeing someone" a year ago, so who knows :P aww you told your parents! Yay! Are they going to harass you until they meet him?
Believe me, I would have left my job anyway, in fact I would have left it months ago if it weren't for the fact that it's pointless to look for a new job when I'm going travelling in a few months. So I'm just killing time now.
I'm going to meet my mum for a drink after work today, as she has my christmas present from my sister that finally arrived. Yay Princess Bride Monopoly! So we'll see if she asks me anything. They will most likely meet at the small party we are having before we go.
I've been ready to leave my job for a while now. I just don't enjoy being here any more, I'm sick of not being around people and I think it might be time for a change. I've even looked a little bit at some jobs out of the state.
Oh really? Have you ever lived out of Tasmania before? That's very exciting. I feel ya about needing a change. I don't like the environment at my work, and to add insult to injury, a bunch of things I was hanging in there for (like a trip to Melbourne for a conference in June) keep getting cancelled, so I feel dumb for sticking with it for this long. I will very much be needing a fresh start career-wise after this trip.
Let me know how Princess Bride monopoly is! It better be damn amazing after taking this long to get to you.
Apart from the two years I lived in England I have never lived outside of Tassie. I've loved my job for a long time (I am in the 9th yr of working here OMG!). But I haven't enjoyed it for just over a year now and I think it is more to do with my closest work friends leaving and my desk got moved so I don't have people close to talk to. I've really been thinking about making a complete change and doing something different but like you I'm gonna wait till after my trip.
I actually can't believe its finally arrived. I really hope its good too. I've built it up so much in my mind. Probably won't get to play till the weekend though as we are heading to the movies tonight.

And that's what's news.
