“One plus One equals Three.”
Sora says, cause Sora knows.
“You aren’t listening, Sora.” His mother scolds. She is trying and failing and trying and failing and she just wants her son to understand basic math. Really. That’s all. “One and One makes Two.” She takes each of his hands in her own and counts both of his pointer fingers out loud. “One. Two.” And it’s simple, right?
Sora frowns and chews on his bottom lip. He is not as clever as Riku or Kairi and things come slower to him. But this is one lesson that he knows he knows already.
He counts his fingers, but he still gets Three.
“Oh, Sora.” His mother says exasperatedly as she tries again to make him understand. He is being particularly stubborn about this problem for some reason. As gently as she can she makes another attempt.
“How about this. Let’s say you and Riku were playing catch one day. You are one person. And Riku is one person. Together, how many people are playing catch.”
“Three.” Sora does not hesitate.
“No, two. You and Riku. That’s two of you.”
“What about Kairi?” His baby-blue eyes bore into her soul sometimes and he is her most precious possession in the whole world.
“Kairi isn’t there, my sweet.” She explains calmly. Sora does not look pleased.
“Why not?”
“She just isn’t.”
“Is she sick?”
“No.”
“Then why isn’t she there? I want to play with Kairi.”
“All right then. So you and Kairi are playing ball and -”
“Riku?”
“Sora.”
“Don’t you see mom?” He holds his fingers out to demonstrate. “There’s One of me, One of Riku and One of Kairi. When you put them together it’s Three. No less.” He hops out of his chair and goes towards the back door. He smiles at his mother before racing outside.
She looks at the sheet of homework beside her. All of them correct except for the last. One plus One equals Three.
She makes a move as if to change it, but stops herself.
“One plus One equals Three.” She whispers under her breath. Outside it is warm and she watches as three small children run around the backyard, laughing. They are innocent and they are foolish and they still believe in forever. She puts the pencil down and leaves the answer intact. She smiles warmly as she moves towards the window.
“Sounds right to me, Sora.”
a/n: I love OT3s and so does Sora. Both of us are also bad at math. Go figure.
