Then one day he gave it back.

“Oh.” She sucked in her breath and tried not to think about it. He was repaying his debt, that was all. It didn’t mean anything really. Right? He was a boy and boys don’t understand things the way girls do and so it meant nothing. Nothing. It couldn’t have possibly had any relation to another girl with brown hair and a pretty face. No.

“Well...here.” He muttered barely audibly, not even looking her in the eye as he pushed it towards her. She couldn’t bring herself to reach out a hand.

“A bike?” Her voice caught. She cleared her throat and said again, “A bike.”

“Yeah.” He wouldn’t look at her, but that didn’t mean anything really. Just because he wouldn’t look at her didn’t mean what she was afraid it meant and giving her a bike was just repaying a debt and had nothing to do with not-her girls that he’d been travelling with for awhile now.

“I...Thank-you.” She finally managed to touch the handlebars. They were cold, but it felt like her fingers were burning.

“It’s blue!” He said suddenly, “I know you like blue.”

It didn’t mean anything.

“Oh, yeah. I do.” She studied her feet and tried very, very hard not to think about it. Because boys don’t think like girls do anyway.

She felt a tear slide down her face.

“Misty.” He whispered. She laughed and wiped her eyes with the back of her hand. Then she stared at him all baby-eyed and tragic and tried not to look like she was drowning.

“It’s all right. I understand.” She crossed her arms behind her back. “Now I have no reason to follow.”

“I didn’t mean -”

“It’s okay, Ash! I’m not sad.”

But even the stars could tell she was lying.

“It’s just...I didn’t want you to get stuck on a path with no way out. I wanted to help you find your way back. I...I’m sorry.” He took a step towards her and bit at his lip. “I didn’t know how to say that though. So I thought...maybe I could show you instead. It’s a really nice bike, Misty - I promise.”

“I know.” She ran her hands over the seat. They both stared at the bike for a few minutes, neither knowing what to do next.

“Well,” Ash finally interrupted the silence, “What now?”

“I love you.”

“W-what?” He backed away from the red-head and quirked an eyebrow, “What do you-?”

Before he could say anything else she flung the bike to the ground and started kicking at it desperately. Over and over she beat her feet against the metal until it hurt too bad and she had to resort to her fists. She fell to her knees and pounded on the bike with tiny fists and tried very, very, very hard not to think about it.

Soon, Ash was beside her, clamping hands over her wrists as she sobbed. He restrained her and pulled her back against his chest, while she tried so very hard to stop understanding what it meant.

“Misty...” He whispered by her ear and she clung to his arm and imagined him holding that other pretty-faced girl and felt everything real drain out of her.

“I’m so sorry.” He mumbled over and over again while she tried to breathe.

“If I could just break it - if I could just have a reason. If only I hadn’t... Oh, Ash - I hate you! I love you... This. cannot. be. real.”

And there was nothing he could say.

:: What she missed most of all was knowing what it felt like to be home ::

a/n: S'been awhile. Though I've never really written for the pokemon fandom, I have to admit that I love the old school episodes and I miss them alot. I have a bunch of them on tapes, because my neighbors gave them to my brother, so it's neat to go back and see some of them.

Oh and tragic Misty/Ash, because I can.
