The pic that started it all! The whole idea behind Trying was that Arnold not finding his parents in San Lorenzo would kind of fuck him up a lot. He'd be a lot more bitter/angry about everything. Then, without the beacon of light and goodness that Arnold was, Helga would have to go on finding her own way.
Basically it was just... Arnold is jaded and Helga hates it and so she's gonna be the one to remind him of how good he used to be.
The idea kind of got mashed up a bit as the story went, but some of those underlying themes are there. However, Helga's still got Arnold up on something of a pedestal and she REALLY needs to let go of that.
Curly/Eugene! I'm not sorry that they ended up being my favorites. They totally have a role coming up in Trying and it's awesome. They actually sort of get to be the second most important characters in the story? Haha and yet they aren't even introduced yet! But yeah, they're super helpful and also hilarious.
I guess I'm going to give away some spoilers in this. Yes. I totally am.
Helga and Arnold eventually make it back from San Lorenzo, but then their airplane gets shot down over Hillwood and they have to jump for it!

And one of Sid! I'm hooked on the idea that he grows the worlds longest/greasiest ponytail. Maybe he should also get some super offensive/gross facial hair.
Fun Fact: Sid is totally in love with Stinky in this universe. Also, Sid almost went to jail once (he was dealing), but Rhonda used her influences to save his ass. He had to go to rehab and now he's slumming at Stinky's and basically trying to get his shitty act together.

The first spoilers for Helga's dress as it appears in Chapters 11/12. You can see me planning to stick Arnold under there. Also the middle picture is a scene that will be showing up soon-ish. Helga dances with a certain someone and it may fuck up their already super fucked up plan.
I think the important part is just the main drawing of Helga in the bottom middle. She's wearing an outfit that she actually wears in the story.
Curly/Eugene. I was so excited back when I first thought of adding them in. BEST OTP.
These were mostly just dress concepts. Obviously the big floofy one is for the masquerade ball.
This is... a really boring page. Just character emotions. There's not even any direct story points to connect them to.
I've had thoughts about having Helga cut her hair at some point during Trying. I'm sort of leaning towards no at this point. I have other, bigger symbolic objects that I plan to weave into the story.

A lot of scenes in Trying are originally planned to be super sappy and emotional. But then I write them and they just turn out sort of funny and angry. I'm cool with this because who really wants to see Helga have an emotional breakdown about stealing her neighbor's car? Not me.
Ughhh, I wanna spoil this, but I CAN'T. It's too big of a moment.
