Your pictures are so cute! I love Grumpy sims and their less than amused faces :D.
I agree with you in the wanting to have everything run smoothly and look nice at the same time. After experiencing the very nice gameplay/graphics combo with the Sims 2 in my laptop, it is a bit jarring to switch to the Sims 3 and having to choose between lagging and blurry graphic. I obviously prefer blurry graphics than tons of lag that make the game a chore to play, so that's why I rarely share pictures of my Sims 3 playing.
As for mods, I'm no expert, but I recently searched more info to participate in Maxis Taste's makeover contest (precisely with the Goths) and there is now a posing hack that works pretty well. It looks like a sculpture and you download "pose packs" from different creators as add-ons.
When you click on the sculpture, you can see a list (with pictures!) of all the poses you have installed and pick accordingly, instead of messing around with tons of poseboxes and their often unintuitive descriptions like on the Sims 2. As much as I hate to admit it, it seems like Storytelling with the Sims 3 might become much easier than with the Sims 2 in time (the fact that you can instantly access Create a Sim doesn't hurt either).
