Wanted

She fingers the sword through her stomach.

“Ew.” It’s not really a complaint, but it’s also not a cry for help. He’s surprised. He expected sobs. He expected screams.

She wrinkles her nose.

He doesn’t say a word.

“Grossssssss...” She whines as she turns her head to stare at anything but the hole through her middle. He almost reaches for her, but stops himself. She is not his concern anymore. She never was.

“Does...” He starts before he can stop himself. She turns to him and her eyes are a brilliant shade of green and now he has to continue. Good going, Uchiha. “Does it hurt much?”

She scowls and he almost laughs, because he never thought they’d reach the point where she could look at him like that and really mean it.

“No, Sasuke-kun, it feels like rainbows and sunshine - what do you think?”

The ‘kun’ is still there and suddenly he feels like he just got the wind knocked out of him.

“Damn.” He mutters through a shaky laugh.

“Ughh...” And the disgust in her voice has reached an all time high and he feels like he should say something.

“Errr...” And then a question pops into his head and he wonders why it didn’t occur to him before. “Why did you...” He sighs as he quickly composes himself. “Why did you do that?”

“Because I enjoy being brutally murdered.” She rolls her eyes and he’s beginning to wonder who on earth this girl - woman is. Surely this is not the Haruno Sakura he knew and lov-...that he knew.

And that was it.

“Sakura...” He prompts and he watches her body suddenly freeze.

“Don’t...” Her lip trembles. “Don’t say it like that!”

He raises an eyebrow.

“Hn?”

He watches as her face turns red and he’s very surprised that she’s showing any kind of emotion at the moment - aside from fear and agony that is.

“So...dark and heavy...husky and...” Don’t say it like you mean it...don’t lie to me...not NOW. Her mind is screaming, but even now she will not say those things to him. She turns away, but catches another glimpse at the sword and has to close her eyes to stop herself from fainting. She feels so dizzy.

Her eyes flutter open when she realizes that he’s lifting her head up oh so gently and laying it back down in his lap.

“Sakura...” He teases and she is suddenly furious.

“Leave me be! Go away! I don’t want you anywhere near me! Just because I loved you once doesn’t mean anything and I -”

She is silenced when he runs hand along her cheek.

She shivers.

“Sa...Sasuke-kun.” She whimpers.

“You fought bravely. You have gotten stronger, Sakura. I’m...proud.” He gently pulls a hand through her hair and against her will she moans softly. “You held your own against me. Something you never could have done before. You came at me with intent to kill. I was surprised.” It’s at that moment that she finally realizes how labored his breathing is. She feels him wince as he moves his arms. Had she really managed to affect him so? Her, Haruno Sakura, the gentle flower child of Konoha? Was it possible?

“Sasuke-kun?” She asks suddenly.

“Hmm?” He replies absentmindedly.

“Could you...take it out of me...It’s...” He feels her shudder. “Please...”

He nods as he gently removes her head from his lap. He moves to her side where he takes a few seconds to stare at the weapon. Damn. It looks a lot worse now.

“A-are you sure?” He feels at a loss for words. This is...the first time he’s ever had to do this. Ever had to see her like this. Three years ago he’d been a whole hell of a lot better at protecting her from this sort of thing. He almost loses it when he realizes that he just put the words three years ago and better into the same sentence. Because if those two things belong together then where does that leave him NOW?

“Yeah...” She whimpers a bit. He reaches for the hilt and then freezes.

“You’ll die.”

“I know.”

He can’t move.

“Sasuke-kun...its all right. Its...please?”

He shakes his head.

“No. You’ll die.”

“I’m going to die anyway, Sasuke-kun.”

If he was having trouble breathing before, its nothing compared to now. He’s panting with strain. She’s not sure if the fight is catching up to him or that it has something to do with the ridiculous sword through her stomach.

“Naruto said...he said you could heal!” And suddenly he’s leaning over her, glaring directly into her eyes. She smiles up at him, which causes his frown to deepen.

“I can.”

“Well then...do it!” He commands right by her ear. She winces.

“I can’t fix everything.”

The scowl is gone in an instant. He turns his head to avoid her gaze. He desperately tries to compose himself. It isn’t working very well.

“Is...there anyone who can?” He closes his eyes. He doesn’t want to hear the answer he already knows.

“There is...” She winces, the pain is getting worse. She inhales and it sounds so ragged and hopeless. “One person...But...”

He nods.

“The new Hokage. That woman.”

“Tsunade-sensei.”

“Of course.”

He suddenly leaves her line of vision. She can sense him pacing about. She briefly wonders what he’s thinking, but she’s finding that its becoming much harder to focus on any one thing.

“Naruto will be here soon.” She says suddenly. The thought came out of nowhere. “You will...want to fight him, right?”

She can hear him muttering under his breath. She smiles a bit.

“How far?” He asks suddenly.

“How far what?”

He swears loudly.

“How far away is Konoha? How far away from the idiot? How far...” He lets the rest of the questions fade.

“Konoha is close...Naruto...Hnn...knowing him...even closer.” She turns her head a bit, ignoring the pain. She’s desperate to see him. “But...Sasuke-kun, what are -” She gasps as she feels pressure on her sides. Two strong arms wrap around her small frame and hoist her up. She groans as the pain in her stomach worsens. “Sas...Sasuke-kun?” Her face feels hot. Maybe she’s blushing.

Or...maybe she really is dying.

That last thought hits her suddenly and she begins sobbing.

“Sasuke-kun! Please...I - I don’t want to die, Sasuke-kun! Please....” She can make out his face in the haze that is beginning to cloud her mind. He looks worried.

That’s not right...Sasuke-kun never looks anything. Sasuke-kun is just...Sasuke-kun.

“Shut-up Sakura.” He whispers almost gently. “You’re not going to die.”

She nods as she snuggles against him. He stiffens and then allows himself to relax just a bit. He sighs and brushes a few stray hairs out of her face. She whimpers against him and then quiets. She’s fallen asleep.

Or so he thinks.

He is already moving towards the village when a hand suddenly snakes out of no where and gently strokes his face. He looks down and finds Sakura staring up at him, her face flushed and her eyes dulled. She’s smiling.

“I...love you. Sasuke-kun.”

“I know.”

“G...good.”

And then she’s out again.

He pauses on a tree outside the hokage’s tower. He stares at the girl in his arms and at the woman inside the tower. This is stupid. Even for him.

He should have let Sakura die. She wanted to get in his way. She wanted to fight him. She deserved it. She killed herself. Suicide.

He should have just let her go. Let what she represented, what she was...let it all just die with her.

It’s not like he’d ever be able to have it anyway.

It sounds so simple in his head. So easy.

But he knows that he never would have been able to do that. Not to Sakura. Never to Sakura.

He hates her for this.

He lands inside the room and stares straight ahead.

The hokage doesn’t look at him.

“Heard that, Naruto. You’ll have to try harder to surprise me next time. That was incredibly sloppy. Even for you.”

Sasuke feels his eye twitch.

“Hnn.”

Suddenly the Hokage’s head shoots up. She gapes at him.

“Uchiha.” She breathes.

He nods slightly.

She stares at him for a moment longer before realizing what it is that he’s dragged into her office.

“Sakura!” She exclaims, horrified. She’s running towards him then. Hands forming seals in the air as she runs. He lays the girl on the ground and steps back. Simply watching as the older woman bends down beside her student and begins muttering under her breath. She forms chakra in her hands as she quickly unravels a scroll.

He waits for a few minutes before asking.

“Will she be all right?”

Tsunade glances up. Surprised to see him still standing there. She narrows her eyes at him.

“You were the one who did this, were you not?”

He nods solemnly.

“Then why are you still here? You should be running for your life. Naruto will find out soon enough. He will not be happy with you. If he finds you here, he will kill you.”

“Will she be all right?” He repeats.

“Why?” She demands. “Why injure her like this and then bring her here? Why push her to the edge, only to save her? Why not let her die?”

“I love her.”

The words are there so fast that it takes a moment to realize that he actually said them.

Tsunade’s eyes widen slightly. She feels a smile tugging at her lips, but knows better than to laugh now. So instead she sighs softly and nods.

“She will be fine.”

He bows his head a little and then turns away.

“You should tell her.”

He pauses.

“It would change nothing.”

“She deserves it.”

“No,” He closes his eyes in defeat. “She deserves so much more than I could ever give.”

Tsunade watches as he disappears into the distance.

“That is true, Uchiha Sasuke. But, you see...” She gazes down at her now sleeping student. “You are all that she could ever want.”

a/n: I like tsunade, but I dunno if she's in character. I'm still iffy about writing anyone who isn't Naruto/Sakura/Sasuke. Ah well.

The last of my Naruto fic. I'm not sure if that's good or bad. At least a lot of the angsty, romantic crud is out of my system. I hope.
