“Sometimes...” She’s barely breathing. It shouldn’t hurt him this much. “I wonder...if...” She turns to him, at least that’s what he tells himself, even though she’s only just slightly moving her neck to the side. Bright aquamarine eyes lock with his steely black ones and he knows better than to look away. “If maybe it wasn’t enough...If...” Tears. Damn it. Why’d she have to go and.... Damn it! “If maybe I could have done more...loved you harder. Been a better...a better...” She pauses and turns her gaze from him. “A better me. Prettier. Or smarter. Or nicer...” She’s eyeing the sky, counting the stars and failing once again. “...Stronger.”
“...” The dots are almost audible. He has nothing to say to her (he’s the last Uchiha damn it and hell if he’s gonna answer this annoying, shallow...this hated, ugly...this...).
“Sakura.” He breathes. It’s been so long since he’s actually spoken (its not an important part of revenge).
She looks at him once more and he’s breaking...just a little.
“Shut-up.”
She smiles.
“That’s my...” She coughs and it’s a loud, wet cough that drives him insane. She steadies her breathing and he finds himself crawling closer to her. “Sasuke-kun.”
“Damn it.” He mutters, looking at the marks crisscrossed all over her body. “Why do you have to be so annoying?” He seethes. Marks all over her body - cuts and bruises and she’s bleeding.
“I’m sorry.”
He pounds a fist against the ground and grinds his teeth.
“Don’t apologize! Damn it, Sakura - grow a fucking backbone!” He’s spitting in anger. He moves even closer, but refuses to touch her small form. Goddamn. She’s got hips now. She’s got cuuuuuurves.
“Sorr...I mean...Hmmm...” She’s watching him watch her (except its not so much watching her as it is drinking her in - it’s been too long). She gently reaches a hand out towards his and he pulls back, panic-stricken. She quickly retreats her tiny hand and casts her gaze to the sky once more. “I...yeah.”
“Damn it.” He can see the hurt all over her face (and its more than just the physical pain of dying and he knows it), but he doesn’t know how to fix it. Except he does, but he can’t because he’s put her behind him and he doesn’t want to break her anymore. “You were supposed to be stronger.”
“I...thought I was.” She whispers apologetically even though he told her to not be sorry -never be sorry.
“Idiot.” He’s furious and his heart is pounding in his chest and its been so long since he’d heard it’s beating and he’s angry at her for making him feel even the slightest bit human.
“Guess I’m...” There’s a smile in her voice, but its not the same. “Worse than Naruto, huh?”
“You think?” He snarls, pounding another fist against the ground.
She watches him beat the dirt for a few moments, before interrupting.
“Sasuke-kun?”
“What?!”
The tears are falling faster now. He wishes he could cry like her. He misses emotion so much sometimes.
“Sasuke-kun...could you...would you...hold me?”
He’s frozen. Frozen and broken - bleeding. But its not in the way she’s bleeding. Dying. But not like how she is really, truly dying. Right in front of him. How dare she go and die right in front of him? Damn woman. Always meddling - always screwing up all his perfect idealisms. He wants his revenge and no...no Sakura was going to get in his way. He wouldn’t let her.
“No.”
“Oh.” And he hears the last bit of hope, of light fade from her voice and he’s the one who killed it. He’s the one who killed her. He’d been killing her for years now, but he’d finally really gone and done it. Unleashed a power that was too much for her (no matter how skilled a medical nin she was) to handle. “I guess...I guess I really am an idiot. I thought that...somewhere...inside of you...I thought...” She sighs and closes her eyes. “I thought so much. Thought and planned and hoped. But I never moved. I kept waiting. Kept thinking that one day you’d...find me.” And she’s cracked, but there’s something in her voice that freezes him. “But...” And there’s a small smile on her pale lips. “I was wrong.” Her eyes open and she’s looking at him - only him.
“I love you, Sasuke-kun.”
“...” Those dots again.
Slowly, painfully Sakura lifts herself up (and he has to stare in awe, because she’s dying and they both know it, but she’s a fighter and this is one fight she’ll never give up). She pulls herself closer to him and his mind is screaming at him to flee, but his body feels rooted to the spot.
“I love you and I’m not gonna just wait for you anymore. I’m going to do something about it. Do...” She coughs and almost falls back to the ground. “Do you want to know what I’m going to do about it?”
“...” Because he’s frozen and she’s coming closer and she has hips now! and he doesn’t want to know - really.
“I’m going to kiss you.” She’s so goddamn close and she grabs a handful of his shirt in one hand and looks up at him. She moves towards him, but her whole body is shaking - trembling and she can’t do it. She is ready, but she can’t. “No...” She moans as she begins to falter.
Before she can collapse a hand darts out to steady her. Sasuke closes the space between them in an instant, picking up the slack and kissing her with animalistic need. His hands are warm on the bare flesh of her arms and he tastes like tomatos and morning breath. It is not the perfect kiss and he is not the perfect man and she is still dying, but he’s kissing her like a man starved and she couldn’t pull away even if she wanted to.
He breaks away first, gasping for air.
“Damn it.” He mutters as she falls against him. He scoops her up in his arms and pulls her as close as possible. His eyes are stinging, but has nothing to do with curses or brothers or sharingan.
“You...” She wheezes. He killed her. Killed them all. Killed so very many.
not this warmth too
“You’re crying...Sasuke-kun.” Her breathing is so shallow - so ragged.
“Damn it!” He buries his face in her shoulder.
“Don’t...don’t be...sad....”
not THIS warmth too
“Sakura!” He cries out. He feels weak and needing. He is eight years old and everyone is dead. He is alone. Alone and dead inside. Hollowed.
NOT THIS WARMTH TOO
But she is gasping now, and she’s in his arms and he never wanted this. He’s so alone. So goddamned lonely.
“Sasuke...” Last words, he knows - just knows. “Do you...love me?”
“Sakura...” He moans, broken and faded.
“Please...”
“Foolish girl. You should...you should have known better, Sakura. I kill everything. EVERYTHING.”
NOT THIS WARMTH TOO
“Sasuke...sasuke....”
“I love you! Love you, stupid! Stupid - stupid girl. Sakura. Sakura... You were supposed to stay alive. Stay safe. Stupid girl. Lovely girl. Sakura. My Sakura. Damn it. You...are...” He inhales sharply. “so...annoying.”
“I love...you...too, Sasuke-kun...Sasuke.”
And then she was gone.
He let out a roar, animalistic and heartwrenching.
He laid her back down on the ground and stared at her for a few minutes. The tears were gone. He was the avenger again. He was Uchiha Sasuke again. He was alone again.
Sasuke gazed at her still form.
Then stood up without a word.
And walked away.
a/n: I have no excuse for this. It's sappy and angst-ridden.
And i love it so much.
