The Language of Silence

The Language of Silence is a book by Peggy Webb, it was supposed to come out in September, I suppose it did. I picked up a preview copy at ALA. Or the other conference. Not sure. There were two conferences and a lot of books.

Back to the book. It's amazing. It's the story of two battered women and how they find safety and happiness. Wow, with that description it's amazing I even read it.

Anyway. It's more that. The main character is Ellen, in the beginning of the book we see her trying to run away from her abusive husband in the 70s. Her husband, however, has connections, and arrives at the shelter to bring her home before she even gets there. He beats the hell out of her and lies about it. She has no support from her parents or the others in town. The only person who supports her is her great aunt Ruth who sees the future.

Ruth had previously helped her sister Lola (Ellen's maternal grandmother) run away from her abusive husband. She had forseen that Lola's husband would kill her. She left her baby daughter with Ruth, and ran away. She ended up finding safety and happiness in the circus. And even became a famous tiger tamer. But died shortly thereafter.

Ellen and Ruth run away and find the same circus that Lola had joined. Ellen has to find a place for herself while avoiding her husband.

ok, I'll stop there on the silly stuff. The part that I loved the most was Razz. Razz is the one person from both sides of the story. Razz loved Lola. They planed to get married, but, she died of TB. Razz made me cry frequently. But it was a great book and I recommend it.
