I don't make New Year's resolutions

And then I follow them anyway. For some reason, since moving (possibly because I brought the darned thing all the way up here) I've been practicing violin again. Not, you know, a lot, even by non-musician standards, but I just googled for a metronome and a tuner so that I could force myself to learn the first song in my favorite songbook.* The ( Read more... )

*** - key signature, at least if I'm reading "The Complete Idiot's Guide to Music Theory" 2nd Ed. is correct and I'm understanding the relevant section.

No, isn't the key signature the collection of sharps and flats at the beginning of the staff? I mean the letters--like "G" or "B7" above a particular measure, where if you're just banging out chords for an accompaniment you play that key's chord for that measure.

See, this is how they get you. It starts with just fiddling around with an old instrument that you happen to have. Then something breaks and you figure that you might as well upgrade, and all the sudden you're spending serious money on a new instrument, and then you feel obliged to play it and get better to justify the expense. And then you either gain a new skill or develop an aversion to the thing and avoid it forever. This is why my parents buying me a guitar for Christmas was a bit unfortunate.

When Chuck gave me this one, do you remember how happy I was? Being able to make portable music is, like, really important to me. If I practice, a working violin is ABSOLUTELY worth the $400 I'd have to spend to get it. Yes, it's a month's rent. But it's a skill I want and will use for the rest of my life, if I develop it, plus practicing is one of those meditation times that makes me feel actually happy. If I can't practice... it's not worth it. Depends how much empty-house downtime I have here. Currently: a lot.
