In commemoration

One year ago today, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows was finally released.

I had planned this big, long post about why I love Harry Potter to this day; what this series has meant to me. I still plan on doing that but for now, I thought I'd quote a passage that, for me anyway, was a forceful reminder that bad things (and good) were going to happen in Deathly Hallows. That this was going to be no ordinary story.

Hagrid gave a yell and the motorbike rolled over. Harry lost any sense of where they were: Streetlights above him, yells around him, he was clinging to the sidecar for dear life. Hedwig's cage, the Firebolt, and his rucksack slipped from beneath his knees --

"No--HEDWIG!"

The broomstick spun to earth, but he just managed to seize the strap of his rucksack and the top of the cage as the motorbike swung the right way up again. A second's relief, and then another burst of green light. The owl screeched and fell to the floor of the cage.

"No -- NO!"

"Hedwig -- Hedwig --"

But the owl lay motionless and pathetic as a toy on the floor of her cage. He could not take it in, and his terror for the others was paramount. He glanced over his shoulder and saw a mass of people moving, flares of green light, two pairs of people on brooms soaring off into the distance, but he could not tell who they were--

"Hagrid, we've got to go back, we've got to go back!" he yelled over the thunderous roar of the engine, pulling out his wand, ramming Hedwig's cage ont the floor, refusing to believe that she was dead. "Hagrid, TURN AROUND!"

Yeah... that was the moment for me. I still have not re-read Deathly Hallows. I'm one of the few I know. I'm making my way to it now as I'm just finishing up Chamber of Secrets. I have a big post planned about the Weasley family so hopefully I can get that posted soon.

In the meantime, if you have any time today, please share some of your favorite Harry Potter passages, whether they be Deathly Hallows or any book. July 21, 2007 was a day I know I'll never forget. I had been looking forward to it from the very moment it was announced that it would be the release day. Harry Potter has been with me all through my college years, and heck, even two of my high school years. I have not been able to get rid of this icon yet because it holds so much nostalgia for me. 2007 was truly the year for Harry Potter for me. I had the chance to meet J.K. Rowling, I had the chance to hear her read from the book, to talk about her work. I had the chance to finally learn so many secrets of the Harry Potter world. That is simply amazing to me. While 2008 has been good to me so far, 2007 is a year that is going to live in my head for years to come.

Anyway, I know I'm sounding oddly sappy about a book and to some people, that's just weird. Harry Potter will never be just a book for me. So, here is to July 21, 2007. A day I'll always remember.
