One of my friends has already contacted his congressman about this bill, and I plan to as well. I encourage everyone to contact your congressmen about this even if you’re not a creator yourself, even if you just read comics, magazines books, etc. Here is a letter as an example or a template if you will if you’re interested in sending something to your local congressman.

Dear Mr. Smith,

Please, I implore that you don't pass this legislation. The new Orphan Works legislation affects any image created by me and every artist, sketches, notes, emails, photos (even ones of our family’s), paintings, printings etc. If we want to own them, we have to pay. And pay we will.

If this legislation is passed by the US Congress, we will have to pay to own the rights to something we have created. Currently by default we own the rights when we create an original work, unless we relinquish the rights to it, but this may be no longer true. That means anyone, from Johnny's Skate board shop to "Big Corporate Business" companies, can use my drawing of an original character as a mascot or a picture of my wife for a hair ad. This is supporting theft of art, and is wrong & immoral.

This will affect everyone worldwide. This is a red flag, and we in the US that care about the creative freedom we deserve are acting now. Please inform your fellow Congressmen and Senators to not let this pass. We are supposed to be in the land of Freedom! So why try to take away my artistic freedom and allow anyone to use what I have created? Thank you for your time. And I hope to hear from you soon.

Best Regards,
Amanda H.
