Book Review: Why Work Sucks and How to FIx It

I'm starting on my job tomorrow! Mixed feelings on this one though. Its not about the job. But I don't really feel like working anymore. So, I think its gonna suck on the first day (i.e. dragging myself out of bed). Anyway, the ever-so-practical me will go to work nonetheless. Who else is gonna pay for my bills if I don't work?!

Anyway, I chanced upon an interesting book (Title: Why Work Sucks and How To Fix It) while browsing the book store in Detroit airport. I was torn between buying the book and trying my luck to see if its available in my local public library. And the ever-so-practical me decided to go with the latter. It was a good move though...my local library had a new copy in the collection.

I was so engrossed with this book! I see myself in one of those interviewees! (In my last job)

Be prepared for my REVELATIONS:

"I finished that project a day ahead of time, but don't tell anyone. I don't want to hand it in early or else the boss will just dump more work on my desk"
- Thats me! I keep my emails in my outbox for days before sending them to my boss! hahaha

Someone says, "Eleven o'clock and you're just getting in?" because they can't say, "That's not fair! I got in at eight like everyone else."
- Thats me too! Well.... I am not that sarcastic.. I will probably joke about it (for e.g. "Ohhhh you should be working till 7pm today since you came in late this morning " :P)

Ok there are more....but the point is....I've came to realize.... it doesn't matter how much hours you put in. What does matter is your output. This book emphasizes on Results-Only Work Environment (ROWE). The approach lets people do what they are good at instead of what they think they should be good at. It encourages people to contribute rather than just show up and grind out their days.

I hope my new workplace practices ROWE!

P/S: And yes, I will not be sarcastic to my colleagues anymore if they come in late.
