For those who want a Dreamwidth Account

I don't have invite codes. They're trying to control their growth to make sure they can handle the load they have. But my recommendation if you're going to want a Dreamwidth account and cannot get an invite code is to create an OpenID account there and wait. They're handing out invite codes as they can handle it. And so you'll get a better chance of getting an invite code if you do so. It's also a way to start looking around.

But I would like to point out that they are ~beta~. There are a lot of people very much working to make the site ready for the masses, but they're in closed beta for a reason; it's just not all done yet. So, if you find that certain FAQs aren't written or that certain features aren't there yet, it's somewhat to be expected. But it all seems usable to the extent I've poked around. Some of it wasn't as usable as I expect it will become, but the site works.

If I get invite codes, I will hand them out. Although I suspect I will know more people who will want them than I will get invite codes. Also, come April 30th it will be possible to buy a paid account, and if you buy one month for $3 then it expires and turns into a free account.

Oh, and in case anyone remembers my regular rants against invite codes (although I doubt any of you do), my objection to them, way back in the day, was the way they were implemented without proper support. Because they were intended as a temporary measure, neither Support nor Abuse was given the tools to deal with invite code related problems until long after they were implemented. That was always my objection. I actually think it is quite reasonable to limit growth to what your servers can handle, even if it is very frustrating to those who cannot get in. But it really sucks to do it and not have a way to deal with the problems it creates. I'm assuming they don't have those issues. After all, LiveJournal fixed those problems eventually.

But I used to have fun throwing in a rant about how much I hated invite codes whenever I could. Although an invite code system done well actually does have some advantages when investigating abuse issues... not that that's why they have one. Okay, I'm just drifting off into nostalgia.
